N. Bahr El-Ghazal state officially rejects census results

By Manyang Mayom

June 28, 2009 (RUMBEK) – The state of Northern Bahr El-Ghazal has officially rejected the 5th census results in a meeting last week attended by members of the Council of Ministers, members of the State Assembly, County Commissioners and others.

SPLM, the ruling party of South Sudan, says the census that was conducted last year under-counted southerners, and the party is seeking a redrawing of constituencies.

In a like vein, Northern Bahr El-Ghazal state officials object that the latest census shows the population of the state to have decreased by 3.4% since the last census, whereas every other state of Sudan showed a population increase.

Even war-torn states of Darfur showed a huge population increase, state officials note, showing a common front in rejecting the census, regardless of political affiliation.

Also present at the meeting last week were directors of various departments, representatives from various UN agencies, youth and women’s groups, intellectuals and a delegation from the South Sudan Centre for Census, Statistics and Evaluation (SSCCSE), which officially presented the results.

In the presentation of the SSCCSE team, problems regarding the 5th census emerged. For example, out of 1,237 enumeration areas in NBGS, no data was recorded in 124 enumeration areas, meaning only 89% of the State enumeration areas were covered. Many villages were not reflected on the census results.

Speaking over the phone with Sudan Tribune, Acting Secretary-General for the State Council of Ministers, Garang Kuot affirmed that the move to reject the census results was made officially in a council of ministers, unanimously and officially; he said that the method applied in justifying this step was apt and showed no bias.

He also affirmed that two prominent census officials were present at the briefing: Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) Director of Census, Chol Arua plus the former Director of Census in Aweil, Arkangelo Athian Teng, who is currently Deputy Governor and Minister of Local Government.

The briefing was attended by governor himself as well all ministers, lawmakers and Aweil intellectuals. They have concluded that the 5th census should be repeated.

Bravo bravo!!! to all ministers and authorities for Nothern Bhar Al-Ghal state for boldly decision!! indeed, you are always like that, but don`t let your refusal be like one of the GOSS. At first the GOSS said it will not going to accept the rigged result and they did not do it during an announcement of fifth cesus result!! please don`t do that again.Let refusal be refual without reverse. I am saying this with confidential that we in Greater BG knows how to deal with NCP than other states in the south. Therefore, there is no need of accepting all the fake fools from enemy. Just get organise and wait to see who to temper with your rejection is the one that we are going to kick off with by any mechanism.

Good decision, very good decision, let those states who accepted the fake result census let them use theirs to vote.

NBeG state can not and will not go for nonsense as long as Paul Malong is still a Governor.
