Salva Kiir to visit South Kordofan

July 3, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s First Vice President and head of southern Sudan government will pay a three-day visit to South Kordofan next week, the state governor said today.

Ahmed Haroun the state governor and his deputy Abdel Aziz Hilu were in Juba last May to brief Kiir about agreement reached by the National Congress Party and the SPLM on the state level since their recent appointment. They also extended him an invitation to visit the region.

Haroun told the official SUNA that Kiir who will begin his visit on Tuesday, would hold a number of public meetings in the province particularly in Kadogli, Mejlad and Kauda. Kiir is also scheduled to visit the disputed area of Abyei.

South Kordofan is one three northern Sudan areas that have special status in the 2005 peace agreement. Kiir visit will be the first to a Sudanese state outside the southern Sudan. In the past it had been announced he would visit Darfur and other parts of the country.

The governor said a joint NCP-SPLM committee in the state completed its preparations for the reception of Salva Kiir Mayardit to stresses the commitment of the two peace partners to work as one body.

President Omer Al-Bashir visited South Kordofan last May when the national cabinet held one of its regular meetings in Kadogli, the state capital but Kiir didn’t take part in it.

Salva Kiir to visit South Kordofan
The SPLM Chairman’s expected visit to South Kordofan gets its importance from the fact that the people of the Nuba Mountains joined hands under the umbrella of the SPLM/A which fought the Jallaba NIF/NCP led Khartoum government.

The people of the Nuba Mountains, who one time won the undisputable love of the founder of the SPLM /A Late Dr. Garang de Mabior, have unfortunately received little attention under Kiir’s leadership.

It will be in the headquarters of the gallant Nuba people in the strong hold of the Kauda Mountains, that Kiir will come face to face with how much he in his capacity as the First Vice President of the Sudan has let down the Nuba people who for over twenty years shared the same trenches with him and how many of them won battles under his command or how many of them gave their dear lives so cheaply in their quest to reverse the marginalization of the indigenous populations of the Sudan.

The Nuba people may not offer Kiir or al Bashir or the US administration the Oil they get from Abyei, but yet they as Nuba are a people entitled to a dignified life.

The promised Popular Consultations to take place in 2011 should be viewed seriously. No body should be allowed to under rate the Nuba people and if any one out there is interested in a peaceful co-existence to prevail in southern Sudan, southern Kordofan, Darfur and the Sudan at large, then that person should have an eye for the Nuba people’s cause.

At this juncture, may I pay my deep respect and tribute to the Late Rev. Philip Abbas Ghaboush and my late brother Commander, and a hero of all times, Yusif Kuwa Mekki. Last but not least I salute late Dr. John Garang de Mabior, the great SPLM/A architect and leader. May these great souls strengthen the minds of the Nuba people and enlighten the way for them to achieve their long awaited salvation.

Salva Kiir to visit South Kordofan
This visit should have been the fourth visit to South Kordofan for Gen. Kiir Mayardit.

The 1st visit that should have been paid to South Kordofan, South Blue Nile, Darfur and Eastern Sudan should have focused on a feedback to the people of those areas for the contributions made by the people of those regions to the SPLM/A Movement minus Darfur as Darfurians were siding Nimeiry, UMMA and NIF regimes. SPLM needed those visits so that people engage with the SPLM chairman and also, SPLM leader neeeds to listen to the people, hear what are the issues the local communities might have to say.

Then the other two visits if they had happened should have been to follow up the outcomes of the first visit.

The visit at this time, however, should have been a good chance for the SPLM chairman to ask people to give him and his party a mandate in the up coming elections by voting to the SPLM parliamentarian candidates and presidential candidate.

Now, the question is; has the SPLM chairman prepared himself enough to convince the people who might ask what took him four years to visit them? And will this preparation be enough to address all the issues that needed more visits before the end of trnasitional period?

Though people may blame the SPLM chairman for his late visit, I personally blame the so-called advisors. This is because I really don’t know what do they advised Kiir as advisors for a president of the party that raised a big slogan of liberating people from man-made problems. What other important issues they advise the president that overtake advising him to listen to the people, thank them for their contributions?

Anyway Gen. Kiir Mayardit’s late visit to South Kordofan State is most welcome and much better than never happen. However, I expect tough time for the SPLM chairman in his visit in terms of public questions, disbelieve even anger and frustration.

My big thanks to Ahmed Haroun and “Manadhal” Abdel-Aziz Adam Al Hilu for their successful request for the SPLM chairman visit. My appreciation to Mr. Haroun does not in anyway meant that he is not longer needed to clear up his name at Hague, he remains a wanted suspect and as he chosed not to cooperate with the ICC, I assumed that he is guilty.
