Sudan’s army repels RSF drone attacks on key cities, military sources say

August 12, 2026 (EL OBEID/ATBARA/OMDURMAN) – Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a simultaneous attack using kamikaze drones on Wednesday morning, targeting several major cities, including El Obeid, Atbara, Omdurman, and Khartoum North, military sources and witnesses said.

In El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state in western Sudan, military sources told Sudan Tribune that several RSF suicide drones attacked the city before army air defence systems shot down two of them.

Witnesses reported hearing three loud explosions in El Obeid as anti-aircraft defences engaged the drones overhead.

In Khartoum state, army air defences repelled several RSF drones targeting western Omdurman early on Wednesday morning.

A separate drone targeting the Al Drushab neighbourhood north of Khartoum North was shot down before reaching its target, landing inside a local mosque.

In Atbara, the largest city in River Nile state, RSF drones attempted to strike the city but were intercepted. Several crashed into agricultural land near the village of Um Al Tuyour on the west bank of the River Nile without causing casualties or major damage.
