Ministers to meet on Sudan crisis on sidelines of UN General Assembly

September 7, 2026 (NEW YORK) – International diplomats will convene in New York on Sept. 21 for a high-level ministerial meeting to address the crisis in Sudan, on the sidelines of the annual United Nations General Assembly, a Western diplomat told Sudan Tribune.

The ministerial and coordination talks, coinciding with the International Day of Peace, are expected to be held under a joint invitation from the U.N., the African Union, and the East African bloc IGAD.

Representatives from key stakeholder countries will attend the sessions to assess recent developments in the war, push for a humanitarian truce, and help launch a viable political process, the diplomat said.

Separately, former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok is leading a delegation from the civilian Sumood coalition on an upcoming visit to Washington and New York.

Hamdok is set to hold meetings with U.S. State Department officials, members of Congress, and international diplomats to urge Washington to exert greater pressure on the warring parties to reach an immediate ceasefire.

The newly appointed U.S. Chargeé d’affaires for Sudan, Jonathan Howard, will participate in the meetings alongside senior U.S. diplomats and African Union envoys.

The talks come against a backdrop of deep divisions among Sudanese factions over foreign mediation and competing proposals aimed at ending more than three years of conflict.
