Sudan says working to facilitate migration of Ethiopian manpower

August 2, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese interior minister said his ministry committed to facilitate the migration of Ethiopian workers adding it exerts the necessary efforts to simplify the regulations in this regard.

Sudan and Ethiopia signed last June a series of agreements including a deal on the migration of manpower between the two countries.

Many Ethiopian nationals work illegally in Sudan due to the difficult conditions to obtain residence permit.

During a meeting with the Ethiopian Ambassador to Sudan Ali Abdo on Thursday July 30, Minister Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid said his ministry is keen to review the current regulations and to ensure the success of the Social Affairs Joint Ministerial Commission between the two countries.

For his part, the Ethiopian Ambassador praised the services provided by the Ministry of the Interior to the Ethiopian community in Sudan. He further stressed the cooperation of the Embassy with the Sudanese authorities to regularize the situation of the Ethiopian community in Sudan.

Despite the international financial crisis, Sudan is still enjoying an oil-fueled economic boom. China and Mideast countries continue to heavily invest in Sudan.

The Sudanese government is considering to sign bilateral agreements on manpower importation with different countries.

Also, yesterday the Central Bank of Sudan has decided exempt Egyptians working in Sudan from the requirement of residence and work permits when they transfer money to their country.
