October 27, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – A prominent Sudanese political movement said on Tuesday it began reviewing its participation in current political coalitions, urging an alliance led by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok to shift focus from power sharing to protecting civilians.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-Revolutionary Democratic Current said in a statement that its leadership bureau had formed a committee to rigorously evaluate its coalition ties.

The group is demanding internal reforms within the Somoud coalition headed by Hamdok, calling for broader decision-making and prioritizing Sudan’s catastrophic humanitarian crisis over political negotiations.

The group said existing coalitions serve primarily as bargaining mechanisms for political power rather than as social movements representing ordinary citizens, and urged broader engagement with democratic bodies.

It also called for the establishment of grassroots committees across Sudanese villages and towns to demand reparations and compensation for victims of widespread looting and violence, especially women and children.

“This is an issue that must remain alive, and the aggressors must pay the price for their crimes,” the movement said.

The group added that the United Nations Human Rights Council had recognized the right to reparations during and after conflict, noting that several international bodies have begun taking steps toward addressing the issue.

Sudan’s war, which erupted in April 2023 between the military and the Rapid Support Forces, has triggered severe hunger, mass displacement, and systemic looting of civilian property, livestock, and agriculture, notably in Gezira state and the Darfur region.
