European Commission opens its first office in Juba

August 22, 2009 (JUBA) — The European Commission inaugurated this week its first office in southern Sudan and appointed a permanent representative in southern Sudan.

In a small ceremony organized at the new premises on August 18, the event was attended by Dr. Luka Biong, GOSS Minister of Presidential Affairs, the EU ambassador in Khartoum Mr. Carlo De Filippi, and a number of Southern Sudan official and diplomatic community in Juba.

The new head of the European Commission Juba office is Mr. Jesús Orús Báguena, is the first European Civil Servant to be based in Southern Sudan on a permanent basis.

The executive body of the European Union had been operating for the last few years from a small office within the UNOCHA compound. The EU had been operating for the last few years from a small office within the UNOCHA compound.

The EC has been, and continues to be, one of the biggest traditional development partners in Southern Sudan and a strong supporter of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Some European states as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom are expected to open offices in southern Sudan in the coming months.

    And who said South is not an internationally recognized independent entity that can deal with international powers? This is another death nail on that argument.

    We’re slowly moving away from the dark, evil-minded regime which does not want to see freedom in South Sudan. But we have decided to be free and no one is going to stop us. One step at a time, and we’re close to an unshakable future.
