Rumbek Youth resume wrestling after four years of conflicts

October 14, 2009 (RUMBEK) — Rumbek youth have resumed their favorable game of wrestling for the first time since four years after bloody confrontations in cattle raids and inter-tribal fighting.

The wrestling begun between two rival groups of businessmen working in Rumbek Market and students from Rumbek senior secondary school whose are belonging to Greater Yirol Counties of Lakes state.

“Rumbek is returning back into original roots of peace – I’m very glad. May God keep up this shining face of peace in Rumbek for sometime so that our state could remain calm without killing issues,” said one of Rumbek residents, Flora Yar Mamer.

Since the signing of the Sudan Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005 that ended more than two decades of war, Lakes state youth specially the cattle keepers were at odd.

Inter-clan and inter-tribal conflicts affected the Lakes civilians and displacement becomes common in the state counties particularly Wulu, Awerial, Rumbek North and Cueibet.

The director of Culture in the ministry of Information, youth and sport, Mr. Joseph Mabor Marial, described the wrestling as another step toward togetherness’ in Rumbek youth society.

Youth from the eastern part of Greater Yirol are known for their good performance in wrestling. They organize friendly match with youth from Central Equatoria and Bor in Jonglei.

    He who is going to challenge this very nice game;would be term as mad person.As we know very well that cultures are very important.Well done brothers from Rumbek.We do do that in Bor too.If you feel like to go to Bor town with qualified people from Rumbek in term of wrestling then you can do so.

    That is where real men stand out, not killing machine. This will give every young man sense-of-purpose. I will join it soon. We need fun, not fighting. I hope other tribes drop their violence and seek other ways of heroism.
