Major Sudanese Northern party slams referendum deal
October 18 2009 (KHARTOUM) — The second largest Northern opposition party in Sudan blasted an agreement made this week that paves the way for conducting the 2011 referendum in South Sudan.
On Friday the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) broke the deadlock with the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) on the referendum law agreeing to 51% simple majority votes to declare Southern Sudan an independent country or confirm unity in the referendum.
The NCP has initially sought a 75% or 90% of the votes in the affirmative for independence.
But the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) headed by Mohamed Osman Al-Mirghani criticized the deal.
“It is sad that amending any article of the constitution requires two thirds…while south is seceding through simple majority” Bukhari Al-Ga’ali the elections officials at the DUP told the independent Al-Sahafa.
“How can the division of Sudan be allowed with a simple majority….it will not be interceded for those who call or accept this depressing percentage” he said.
Al-Ga’ali called for imposing other controls that would affect the 51% majority.
“History will not have mercy on any party that goes into the direction to make Sudan’s unity in jeopardy,” he said.
The DUP official urged concerted efforts for the referendum results to lead for Sudan to be united in its current “international and constitutional” form asserting that this is his party’s firm belief.
The party’s chief is known to have had strong relations with the SPLM’s late leader John Garang particularly during Mirghani’s chairmanship of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Al-Mirghani has skipped an opposition conference hosted by the SPLM last month despite participation by most of the other major parties.
The head of the Umma Reform and Renewal Party (URRP) and coordinator for the conference Mubarak Al-Fadil told Sudan Tribune in an interview last month that Al-Mirghani non-participation fears that the Juba conference seeks to replace the NDA.

There is actionable or executable strategy put in place by all Northern political parties to deny successful referendum for south sudan, not only DUP party. It is all Northern parties including the NCP. The devil is really at work in Sudan!!

Mohammed Al-Mirgani, I am not surprised by reaction because I know you and your Late friend John Garang have had bad dreams since your existance in Sudanese politics, but keep it in mind that the years to which Sudan unity should have been a dream to some Sudanese has gone.
it just a matter of few months before South can says goodbye to the north. and by the way, there is no way that your reaction will make any difference to what has been agreed by Splm and NCP at this time.
just go back to exile in Egypt and relax there until 2011 whereby the Self Determination or referendum will actually take place. Sorry you used to go to Saudi arabia a lot so perhaps you can headed there as well.

Are you all listening to Arab? They say this today as a promise but tomorrow it will be another issue.
Listen to this thug, is blaming NCP for accepting simple majority decribing it as acceptance of Sudan division, by the way even if the percentage that require South Sudan to walk away from Khartoum is 90% can we not make that percentage? Yes we can… Now Mohamhed Margina, is too late any way keep talking.
Hey please all Jinubins, please let us wind up and forget the Unity state clashes between Governor Taban and General Matip, come here and let concentrate on our games with the real enemy.

Wow, so a member of DUP now suggest ways to subtage Referendum. My friend let me tell you if you didn’t get it from John Garang. Referendum is not the problem of sudan. the problem is what brought about referendum, and that is OPPRESION, MARGINALIZATION, INJUSTICE AND UNRECOGNITION of the people of Sudan as all Sudanese regardless of their faiths and you Northern Sudanese are the problems that will bring Sudan down to her knees. You guys are so selfish, greedy and backward. You wear lense of islam and ethnicity that doesn’t even matches you to see all Sudanese through.
You want united Sudan? Do the following:
1.remove sudan from arab league
2.silence all microphones that wake people up in khartoum in the morning.
3.let every body choose what to believe in.
4. open bar, music centres, cinema centres, removes all islamic signs off national properties including tv.
5.stop God damned genocide in Darfur.
6. conduct fair and free election
7.recognize all cultures of sudan.
and sudan will be united. other wise, shut up, and see sudan break up in pieces so that you northerners can have your faith but not country of Sudan.
The General Achinbenchien.

Yes, I hate this Arab too much than anythings in this world but not because they are not Christian believers but because their policies has come to blame them in human lives which have been losting in the world including this 3 million that have dies during the 21 years civil war and with additional genocide in Darfurian of Western Sudan and I hope God will helps those remaining but they are still suffering in Sudan particularly, the Southern Sudanese people and Nubian Mountaints and the time will come for Hassan Omar al Bashir and his National Congress Members to go hell.

Why tie your sights on unity at this critical moment huh? Enough of the oppression, segregation, intimidation and inequality afflicted upon us by your deceptive, unscrupulous and bloodthirsty individuals that claim to be the architects of our beloved land, the Sudan. They say “freedom is never voluntarily granted to the oppressed, by the oppressor but must be demanded by the oppressed” said Dr Martin. So we the southerners have been demanding for our democratic rights since the departure of the British but until this day, I take no pride in saying we are still fighting for them.
I must remind you that we are in the 21st century and so your diabolic political intentions are confirmed invalid since the inception of CPA because we the Southerners know where our destiny lies. For us to get to our promised land, we shall ensure that the key protocols are implemented, however, if it turns contrary, that will not shake our confidence whether diplomatically or militarily. So please, save your self time by declining to interrupt the affairs of the south because it is too late now.

This people in the north still do not understand that north and south seperation is a seal deal, it cannot be reverse because it is irreversable, unless this Arabs want to see stars int he day light here in Sudan.
As General Achinbenchien mentioned the only way unity can be saved is by>> the following:
0-President of Sudan must be southerners.
1.Remove sudan from arab league
2.Silence all microphones that wake people up in khartoum in the morning.
3.let every body choose what to believe in.
4.Open bar, music centres, cinema centres, removes all islamic signs off national properties including tv.
5.Stop God damned genocide in Darfur. 6. conduct fair and free election.
7.Recognize all cultures of sudan.
8-Islam or Christianity to be a citizens choice, seperate state and religion.
9-Accept Sudan is an african country.
If you Arab implement this conditions honestly and sincerely without any beating around the bush before 2011
Then Sudan will be united. other wise, shut up, and see sudan break up in pieces so that you northerners can have your faith but not country of Sudan.

This Islamist old man called Mr. Molana Mohamed Osman Al-Mirghani still thinks with an old-fashioned Northern elites’ dictatorship and oppression on the South. No way for his outdated call for unity of the old Sudan at this moment, especially with the young generation of the South whose eyes have become wide open to be cheated so easily!
It has been a practice worldide that the victory for self-determination in a referendum is by simple majority. If this old guard is unhappy with this commonly held practice in the whole world, let him go to hell. I pray that he hold on alive untill 2011 when the trumphets and drums of victory shall overwhelm all corners of the South with happy chants of freedom and independece from unjust old Sudan.
If Molana Al-Mirghani is not ready to receive the good news of independece of the South, let him report to the grave by then so that the history records him down as one of bad unjust Northern Sudanese politicians who have been working hard to block the freedom and dignity of Southerners from the Independece. The days where Al-Mirghani family has been worshipped are gone to the archives of history. No Southerner is going to bow down or lick the feet of Al-Mirghani any more. The slavery is over; it is time for freedom.

Dear DUP,
The people of South Sudan will not forgive anybody who wants to sabotage their march to freedom. Our freedom in South Sudan is more important to us than anything else. We have paid for it in kind and action, and we’re ready to defend it should anything happen. So nobody has any right to impose any condition on the conduct of the referendum.

To southern Sudanese:
The list General Achenbenchien made as preconditions for unity in Sudan is good, and please everybody don’t dismiss it out of hand. I believe there are many in the north who envy the southerners for having taken the initiative and fought back. You know Muslims can’t fight for freedom: they are paralysed by their religion. Other people have to fight on their behalf, because they can’t do it themselves. I have heard people in Khartoum mocking southerners for their tribal conflicts. Because they in the north are trapped by apostasy laws and so on, they can only gloat impotently at others’ weaknesses, and excuse themselves for their own cowardice.
But while you are thinking about preconditions for unity of the entire Sudan, which are not outside the realms of possibility, what about what you are letting happen in the south? Why not ban the shouting from the mosques in the south? Why do you allow Muslims, even Somalians, to immigrate? You know what will happen. What if you do separate – will you still allow Muslims to immigrate and, worse, marry your women? Then you will end up with the same problems, but with less land to negotiate in. Then they will demand a part of South Sudan because they will say they need their own area to implement Sharia, which they can’t live without. It happens all around the world. Wherever they go, they demand that Islam dominate. But why do they leave Islamic countries? Because they are horrible to live in, but also to expand their operations, which is a command of Mohammed. They will never leave you alone unless you take strong action. Look at Pakistan: they demanded separation from India and but some of them stayed, and now they make trouble for India and are demanding more territory (Kashmir.) When they get that they will start on the next place. In this case you are the ones demanding your own territory, but it is a fallback demand: once, all Sudan was yours, wasn’t it?
Get your independence if you like – but you can still lose everything in time, despite all your suffering and sacrifices, if you don’t learn from history, and resist their demands, which start small but get bigger. Independence could be a poisoned chalice. Think about it carefully.

Major Sudanese Northern party slams referendum deal
Dear All,
First if we carefully read the article we will realise that the TITLE of the article does not reflect the content of the article.
The content does not refer to the official spokesman neither does it refer to the head of the party. It mentions what the elections official said. This could well be his own opinion.
Can Sudan Tribune next time be more precise and honest about news reporting because this is misleading and only agitates negative feelings. The media in sudan needs to develop much more and take a more national look at issues.
I don’t understand why people lose concentration these days.
They are more ready to talk than THINK.
The DUP is the only sudanese party I believe that cares about the south. Back in the 50’s it had 3 southern ministers including Santino Deng, Ciricio Eiro and another plus many other officials long before there were southern parties or even northern parties having such a mix of ethnic groups in their membership.
In the last free elections it gained the largest number of votes (won 22 constituencies) and Dr. Garang even asked for a governor to a southern town to be appointed by the DUP (because the DUP used to run that town during democracy and people were well satisfied with their governor-who by the way was a southerner).
Also the article referred to the DUP as the second largest party but I thought it won the LARGEST number of votes (approx. 5 million) in the last elections, followed by the Umma party (which gained more seats in parliament).
We need to study our FACTS more accurately and LEARN our history before we talk and spread extremism and ignorance.
Sudan was once a hope for a much better future. Since the Turabi group ruled it they created this antagonism between the people. Know sudan is a dream and unity or secession will not make much difference to either northeners or southerners. But unity will allow both people to fight off the Turabi and what remained of his gang. The NDA brought down the Turabi because it included the SPLM and the DUP. So let them continue united till this regime is changed. Otherwise we all lose.
The main enemy of EVERY sudanese is the Turabi and the NCP. So let us FOCUS and work to get rid of it snd STOP dividing ourselves.
