UDP rejects vote quorum for South Sudan referendum
October 24, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — The United Democratic Party, one of the newly formed and registered Southern political parties which has its headquarters in Khartoum, today strongly rejected an agreement on the Southern Sudan referendum.
The two signatories of the 2005 peace agreement, the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) agreed after 12 months of talks that 66% of all the registered voters should participate in the popular consultation in order to recognize the outcome of the referendum
Move most southern intellectuals rejects this quorum of 2/3 saying it is difficult to guarantee 66% turnout during voting day due to a myriad of challenges including insecurity, logistics and terrains.
They also agreed that the exercise of the referendum can be repeated within sixty (60) days in case the first exercise fails to attain the 2/3 voters turnout.
Speaking at his office in Khartoum suburb of Amarat, Tong Ayat Lual said his party has strongly rejected the deal recently announced by Southern Sudan Vice President Dr. Riek Machar on the turnout quorum. He added that South Sudan will hold SPLM responsible for any hazardous concession this time
“How possible to guarantee the participation of 66% of southern Sudanese, he posed stressing that it is difficult to force them go to polling stations.
Lual further said SPLM must resume negotiations to reach final and applauded compromise with the National Congress Party.
Initially the NCp asked that 90% of the voter should vote in favor of the independence to but it accepted the simple majority (51%) to declare Southern Sudan an independent country or confirm unity in the 2011 referendum.
The people of Southern Sudan shall vote in January 2011 referendum to choose between confirming the current unity of Sudan and creating an independent country. The people of Abyei shall vote at the same time to either join the South or remain part of the North.

Ha ha see how the arabs uses Southerns as a tool to fight with each other. A party that is suppose to fight for the right of South is also turning red aganist SPLA/M, if this criminal is willing to rise such issues where were you during the signing of 2005 CPA? it is true that the arabs are arming individual to creature complex things that will mix SPLA/M from road to jungle without knowing the cause of the problems. We have the rights for referendum and in additionl i don’t know what is UDP whether it is Union of Devil Party or whatsoever. Brainless people like Mr Tong should just enjoy their little bread from bashir slowly without bringing sick ideas to South. Shame on you for been used as a tool by arabs to confused Southerns, this is your problems as dinkas, always running after the rich in order to get some benefit, think back to the impacts of your dinkas game with arabs. The impacts of slavery, starving and death are behind your history. Continue but your dinkas will taste the bitter.

UDP rejects vote quorum for South Sudan referendum
Dear readers,
It is very interesting that the Northern opposition parties like DUP of Al-Mirghani and southern parties like UDF of Peter A. Sule reject the referendum bill. I can understand why Al-Mirghani rejects the bill that he believes will make the South independent, but I don’t understand why this other Southern Arab rejects it.
If southerners cannot achieve 66% of their voters to participate in the referendum to get 51% for independence, then it means southerners are not serious to free themselves. I believe even 90% of registered voters can come out of their houses to vote on the three-day (not one day) voting days if they are serious about.
