UN force in Darfur accuse SLM-Nur of impeding its work

November 9, 2009 (PARIS) – The African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) issued a strong worded statement today accusing Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) led by Abdel-Wahid Al-Nur of obstructing its work.

The press release come following an incident by which SLM forces loyal to Al-Nur held a UN plane briefly after mistakenly believing it belonged to US special envoy Scott Gration.

The SLA-Nur were bracing for a meeting Gration organized with defecting commanders in areas they controlled and warned the US official to stay away else they would consider it “a direct interference in the Movements’ affairs”.

UNAMID said that elements from the rebel group surrounded one of their helicopters with a field assessment team at Deribat, in South Darfur for three hours before allowing it to take off.

“It is unacceptable that the Mission’s personnel have again been targeted and threatened in the course of their persistent efforts to assist in restoring peace and security to Darfur. Deliberate attempts to obstruct the operations of the Mission are inimical to attaining overall peace and stability in Darfur and will have an adverse impact on efforts to improve the humanitarian situation in the region, and are totally unacceptable” UNAMID said.

“UNAMID strongly deplores the periodic harassment and detention of its personnel and stresses that it will not tolerate any attempts at intimidation or attacks on its personnel that are aimed at thwarting the progress of the peace process”.

But the SLA chief dismissed the UNAMID statement saying the latter is to blame for the “unfortunate” incident.

“They [UNAMID] know very well that it is our normal business practice to hold their personnel or obstruct their work. This has never happened before and our forces have a code for situations like this that they adhere to,” Al-Nur told Sudan Tribune.

“UNAMID is to blame for not communicating their route before taking off so that SLA can anticipate their arrival. These are our rules and they are very clear. Had they done this, the incident would not have happened” he added.

But the Darfur peacekeepers countered Al-Nur’s remarks saying that “the coordinates of all unamid flights are systematically communicated to the concerned parties prior to any trip”.

UNAMID should be resonable,SLM has very unstained record of dealing with humanitarian missions, since it is fighting for the rights of the people; in fact it’s the cleanest ever, since guerrlla war came to being.Iam not here defending, but it’s undeniable truth that, even it’s opponents admit that .So the big question is; did the personnel of the UNAMID mission which being held applied the necessary safty measures, that will allow them to enter SLM mentioned area? If the answer is No;then themselves to belame for the incident ,and I think they are lucky for not been shot;because SlM areas are not wildlife park to be visited without pre-notification or proper security clearnce.Second,UNAMID shoud not think of assisting Gration in his dirty work of imposing plocies of Doha or imposing a peace which is not there;and yet expect to left unchallenged. And it’s worthmentioning here that, several incedents were reported where certain individual within UNAMID,specially Eyptian officers, and those of Arab origin, are trading intellegince information to Sudan Government, to say the very least;so UNAMID should first clean it’s house from Khartoum agents before talking of obstructing it’s mission.

The Darfur rebels have to protect their people and themselves from the NCP beasts and they are right in intorregating whoever crosses their territory for their own safety.
Mr Gration who was expected to investigate and recommend on solutions to the problems in Darfur has proved to be supporting and siding with the Sudanese Arab Islamic government in Khartoum.
Secondly, the peacekeepers in Darfur are not helping in any way as the Sudanese army continue raiding the villagers, killing, raping and looting the local people’s belongings. The people of Darfur are helpless and the only helper is their rebel group the SLM.

Why then are the peace keepers accusing the rebels when they are neither protecting the civilians nor restraining the Sudanese army from killing the innocent civilians in Darfur?
The measures taken by SLM are correct steps to follow because they are trying to protect themselves (the people of Darfur). They should not be blamed for any activity they have undertaken for safety reasons.

Who do the peacekeepers want to surrender? the Sudanese government that has planned to wipe out the ethnic Fur or the Fur rebels who are fighting in defense of their rights? There is no need for the peacekeepers in that region when they sit back watching children, women and elderly people dying everyday. They need to ask themselves why are they there.

Not surprising, the Egyptian former foreign minister is a bird of same feathers with Beshir the criminal and shares his criminal love with him against the people of Darfur. It is clear that he supports Beshir and never turned up in so many AU panel meetings about Darfur. Though he is from the same continent, he is an arab not an African and has singled himself out by saying he would endanger himself if he visited Darfur. Yes he is so suspicious because he has underground hidden agendas that made him singled himself as being in danger.

The question is, danger from who and for what reason?
