November 16, 2009 (JUBA) – A minister in the Government of Southern Sudan narrowly escaped with gunshot wound on Sunday as his convoy was ambushed by unknown gunmen.
Four were killed and five others wounded, two in critical condition, as the vehicle carrying minister Dr. Samson Kwaje of Agriculture and Forestry was riddled with more than twenty bullets by assailants.
The attack took place as the minister was returning on road from Wonduruba to Lanya County in Central Equatoria state.
Among the dead included the minister’s driver and bodyguard.
Dr. Kwaje who was shot on his right arm said the attackers opened fire on his vehicle from both sides of the road.
The minister and other survivors were scattered into the forest and hunted down by the attackers.
He was rescued after a force of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) was sent from Lanya to the scene.
An helicopter was sent in by the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) which flew the minister to Juba.
More than twenty suspects are reported to have been arrested in the area for investigations.
Minister of Internal Affairs, Gier Chuang Aluong condemned the attack.
He said such a violent act was not the right way to address any issues that might have arisen and led to the criminal act.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit of the Government of Southern Sudan had declared seven days public holiday from November 11th to 17th for constitutional post holders to enable them travel to their respective areas and enlighten the potential voters to register.
Dr. Kwaje was on the enlightenment tour of his home areas where he mobilized the citizens to turnout for the voter registration.
He is also member of the SPLM Political Bureau, the highest leadership structure of the party.

Dr. Samson Kwaje, you are a true liberator and I am glad that God had saved you from those thugs and criminals who intentions are to kill and terrorize our civilian population. Your unwavering patriotic skill during war of liberation is known across Southern Sudan. We are all sadden by the lost comrades indeed and we will always remember them in our hearts. Alas all these criminals must be brought before book and held accountable for their sins against humanity.

I don’t agree that the attacker was an Equatorians, we don’t ever have this cultural attitude of attacking an official person in our region of Greater Equatoria. This case must be investigated properly, since we have present of monkeys, pigs, ducks and dogs it is very obvious that this person who carry the attack is from outside he is not an Equatoria or Pojulu. Lets be specific ladies and gentlement, such attacked are common in some states of in South Sudan accept Equatoria, people who are in Equatoria are now bringing their culture to destroy with our image of Equatorians and Pojulu in particular where the incidenct took place. I will never agree to this coward act as committed by my Equatorians, if we could take proper investigation for sure this man will be identified to be from a states out of Equatoria. This is absolutely stupid and creazy act that crap creatures are trying to kill our ministers? Kwaje is not a looter because Equatorians are not corruptees like fellow gangs. Thank God Kwaje survived(my condolences go to the breaved families of the four who have lost their lives) that devilish ambush.What would a criminal beyind such attack have gained if he/they really killed him?I hope we are not turning into a state where bright people are eliminated in the society…Severe punishment should be applied to them(if they are proven guilty) as a warning to the would-be attackers in any part of Southern Sudan.

This was a very tragic and unfortunate attack on the minister`s vehicle. I think it may have been a planned one because the writer says the attackers hunted the minister down in the forest meaning that he was the target. Dr. Samson Kwaje is another hero, why kill him?. Thanks be to God that he was rescued and is alive. May God stretch His healling hands upon him and other wounded and rests the souls of the innocent in eternal life. I pray that the attackers are investigated, identified and brought to book.

Security, security and security is very important. No wise person can point fingers at this stage. But the GoSS is to be blamed. Nothing serious has been done to make the Motherland safe and secured. Furthermore, corruption can lead to anything unimaginable.

This act of crime is not totally from the villagers who have not for hundreds of years done something of this kind to their own sons and daughters, one who have suffered long period of war alongside with many martyrs who shade their own blood to save the people of Southern Sudan. In the history of Wonduruba, nothing of this kind happened but has happened this year. The people who did it carry the responsibilities and will be held responsible for this act. This act can be compared with what the so called Osama Bin Laden is practising all over the world today.
This is not an easy thing to withstand and I believe that this is the beginning of what will grow bigger and bigger in the future. Those who carried out the attacks are being engineered and no one can deny that. The perpetrators of this criminal act will be identified and face justice. I urge the government of South Sudan to act immediately to stop such a thing from going further. Those found to have been involved must be arrested and questioned properly as to why they carried out terror attack on the election campaigners. The people of Wonduruba need to know that once we loss Dr Samson we miss him for ever and we will miss his love for his own people not as a citizen of Wonduruba but as an important person among all those Sudanese who struggled for the freedom of Southern Sudanese.

We were the role model among other communities of Southern Sudan who love peace and God but today you have decided to follow the footpaths of satan and turned against your own son. You have forgotten that his suffering was to bring better life and future for our young ones. The decision you took to kill Dr Samson is the same as killing your own children. How good is killing compared to refusal and not doing what you think is being imposed on you out of your will? When you kill Samson today or tomorrow who will you kill in the coming days? I want to say that as you become killers and looters, you will never give up these acts and you will continue destablising your beloved villages right from the border with Bereka to the border with Nyangwara. What will be the end result? My fellow villagers of Wonduruba, the end result will be the suffering of our people, the young new generation, the elderly people, women and people with disabilities. I know that for those who have ears, eyes, legs and hands, they do not care about those who are vulnerable because they can run and hide away from justice but what will be your own feelings about your mothers, sisters, fathers and brothers?

There are powerful brokers behind the violence attempt on Dr. kwaje’s life. South sudan will be worse than 1994 Rwanda, unless this ill-acts quickly stop in south sudan.
It is anybody’s guess that there are more ill-advised and ill-judged plans in place to eliminate some of our powerful political figures, but it is just difficult to implement them. These political-motivated assassinations/attempts are carried out to give ways for less political competitions comes the election day.
