South Sudan army collects 592 arms in Central Equatoria
December 17, 2009 (JUBA) — Southern Sudan army said today that disarmament operations are taking place since four days ago in Central Equatoria state where some 592 gun are collected till now.
The region witnessed recently bloody tribal clashes between the Mundari ethnic group in Central Equatoria and Dinka ethnic group from Jonglei and Lacks states. Only from October to November this year over two hundred people were killed during tribal clashes involving Mundari youth.
Since December 12, Sudan People’s Liberation Army forces from “the 7th Infantry Brigade of the SPLA 2nd Infantry Division deployed in Greater Equatoria, are now operating in Terkeka County” said a press statement put out by the SPLA spokesperson Maj. Gen. Kuol Deim Kuol.
Kuol said “592 guns including one 12.7 mm General Purpose Heavy Machine Gun, one 60 mm Mortar and three RPG-7 were collected,” adding the ongoing operations will engulf the other parts of Central Equatoria State in the coming days.
He also praised Central Equatoria Governor Clement Wani, Terkeka County Commissioner, local administrators and Chiefs for their support and cooperation with the ongoing operations.
The military spokesperson stressed that disarmament operations “are now progressing well in the States of Jungolei, Warrap, Lakes, Unity, Upper Nile and Central Equatoria.”
The SPLA will undertake similar operations during the “remaining four States of Southern Sudan in the coming few days,” he pointed out.
In Western Equatoria, civilians are allowed to protect themselves with machine guns, as long they don’t turn the gun against each other, the reason being the fight against LRA rebels is always unpredictable on the civilians, because the armies cannot be everywhere.
One of the central Resolutions of the 7th SPLA General Command and Staff Conference held in Juba from 28th November to 2nd December 2009, is to complete the disarmament of the civilian population in Southern Sudan, not later than 30th June 2010.

It is a good idea to arm Western Equatoria due to LRA consisting in the region, but more work to disarm militia in Central Equatoria. Govrnor Wani knows where their militia men hide the guns.

Now we have given you every single gun we own and we expect you to go and disarm your dinkas to have zero number of guns. Otherwise if we are attacked by dinkas you will be responsible for it.

This is a postive guesture ever, removing arms from the local populations`hands can create the effectiveness of the newly estabished government. It is a time to make sure that life of every southerner is protected.
It is callous to see civians dying in their hundreds daily across south sudan without justification.
I call upon the civilian populations to fully comply with the government`s disarmament process because GOSS is the only organ to blame incase something go wrong with our own security in the south
