South Sudan calls for traditional leadership involvement in conflict resolution

December 20,2009 (JUBA) –The government of the semi autonomous region of South Sudan has called for traditional leadership involvement in conflict resolution in the region awash with fire arms and other weapons.

The regional government has in recent past witnessed regular killing of innocent people mostly children, women elderly and other vulnerable groups.

It is also experiencing public hateful and/or divisive speeches mainly from intellectuals seeking political appointments in the government as alternatives to reaching compromises.

However, in a just convened chiefs conference held in Juba on Saturday December 19, the Minister of Internal Affairs in the Government of Southern Sudan, General Gier Chuang, during his address to the conferees said the leadership at all levels should give a consideration to traditional leaders in playing vital roles to resolving conflicts.

“Chiefs, as local leaders, should play major role in settling tribal conflicts at the community levels, he said adding each leader knows every member of his community and so able to settle it at earliest better than higher authorities.”

He went further to say because they are in constant contacts with members of the clans and individual family members, they are better placed to shoulder proper coordination between the government and the lower level authorities hence becomes primary contacting point.

Similarly, the Human Right Commission Chairperson in the government of South Sudan, Joyce Kwaje, during her speech in the same conference, echoed that chiefs are the first to be contacted in order to further communications on messages which relates to human rights to the people on ground

She also added that chiefs are responsible when it come to application of judicial laws and justice system at community level.

Traditional leaders have crutial roles played in some tribes, but there are some traditional leaders in other comunities that have zero leadership style.

For example, Nuer have no traditional leaders. They have Ngundeeng and wurnyang as their traditional leaders that solve their disputes. The rest of Sudanese are having traditional leaders that solve conflict among themselves unlike Nuer who believd in Ngundeeng as their leader.

I think we will be find, but the satan idol ngundeeng militia pro- arab community will not be ok because they are idol worshipers.
    Thanks

Ultimately, the GoSS officials have now realized that they can’t handle anything without the involvement of local tradtion chiefs. what a noble idea! this is what GoSS shuold have done in the beginning before any disarmament can takes place.

it’s also imperative for GoSS officials to know that traditional chiefs got Degrees in common-sense than those who learned laws by the way of teaching. theirs is practical whereas the school ones are theories.

make sure GoSS pays them to do this because it is not going to be easy for them.

You have my respect minister Gier but allowed me to say this in regard of truths. How can the traditional leaders resolve Southern Sudan’s fued, hatred and tribalism while the architect of these is vicing the SPLM and GoSS government? I means traitor Riek Machar.

I know you are trying to do your work as your interrial ministry is concerned, but still I doubted if that would helped really. Don’t hesitate to do your work because you can’t be blamed for it anyway, but the traitor, the former pro-Arab militia leader, Riek Machar.

If Riek Machar, the man who sparked all these tribalism, feud and hatre is hidding in the same government you are in but calling for us to unite, I don’t think if it could work out fine.

Peace will only come to Southern Sudanese people when he traitor Riek Machar is not in the government. We don’t need this Dinka’s servant, Riek Machar, because he is dividing further our people. If there is something GoSS government need to do right now is to stop the Dinka’s servant, Riek Machar, from further causing more fued, hatre, and bleeding in Unit State.

I thinks every traditional leaders in Southern Sudanwide is awared about our Dinka’s servant, traitor Riek Machar’s militia lie and his problems causing. Only those who do seek help right now are those in Unity State who seem to be influanced by nyagat Riek Machar who wants to confused Unity citizens under their great State government of governor Taban Deng Gai.

others need traditional leaders to settle their communities down, but he himself has a dirty community. You acted as smarter one,but why you bow down in front of those communities now. You thought that your community could have taken others land by acting aggressively.Any community should stand guard for itself from its enemy.
