Jonglei Governor to celebrate Christmas in countryside

By Philip Thon Aleu

December 22, 2009 (BOR) – Jonglei State Gov. Kuol Manyang Juuk says he will celebrate Christmas in villages to convince local people there on the necessity of leaving without illegal arms. He made the remarks at Constitutional Square in front of his office while announcing Christmas public holidays on Monday, December 21.

Gov. Kuol’s tour will cover Twic East, Duk, Ayod, Uror, Nyirol among other northern Counties. He plans leaves Bor town, Jonglei state capital this week.

Of the 11 Counties in Jonglei state, only four are accessible by road during rainy seasons hence, restricting land movement. Bor, Twic East, Duk and Ayod Counties along the traditional road connecting Juba with Malakal are the only Counties one could reach with a great struggle given the loophole-dominated roads.

Jonglei experienced tense cattle raiding, child abduction and attacks on administrative headquarters this year. The State government attributes the surge in tribal conflicts to the guns littering in the hands of civilians. However, Gov. Kuol says the fighting is not a tribal conflict. He says the fighting over cattle, grazing land and water sources has nothing to do with tribes.

Speaking at the SPLM tea party in honor of Dr. Agot Alier on Sunday, Southern Sudan minister of commence, trade and supply Dr. Baranba Marial Benjamin second Gov. Kuol position on tribal tension.

“Jonglei will be stable. We don’t have problems as tribes,” Minister Marial says adding that all will be okay next year.

Speaking to reporters after the address to government staffs on Monday in Bor, Gov. Kuol says he will use the Christmas holidays to preach voluntary disarmament in churches in those Counties.
