Lam Akol warns against South Sudan independence

January 18, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – A Southern Sudanese political leader and a presidential nominee for the semi-autonous region voiced opposition to a choice of independece in the 2011 referndum saying it woul dbe a suicidal move.

Speaking to reporters in the Sudanese capital, Lam Akol who is the leader of the the Sudan People Liberation Movement for Democratic Change (SPLM-DC) said that the weak government in the South and tribal conflicts would guarantee an explosive future for the new state.

“Under the present weak government in the south, calling for secession would be suicide,” Lam Akol said.

“At the moment, with the state of hostility in the South, with the state of tribal conflicts, intra-tribal conflicts, any call for secession at this moment will be a call for the ‘Somalisation’ of Southern Sudan,” he added.

The remarks by Akol, who broke away last year from the ex-rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) that governs will likely put him at odds with the general sentiment in the South favoring secession.

Akol has been fiercely critical of the SPLM leadership accusing it of corruption and lack of democracy but his opponents on th other hand say he is an ally of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) led by president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir.

The SPLM-DC leader will run against the SPLM head and current South Sudan president Salva Kiir in the April elections. His nomination was endorsed by several small Southern Sudna parties.

Akol said that his group’s position on independence, for the vast oil-rich region that is the size of France, “is determined by conditions on the ground.”

In 2011 Southern Sudanese will vote in accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) to decide if they want to remain within united Sudan or form their own state.

I don,t really know whether DR Lam Akol Ajawin has difference heart with human being. The man is so different with the entire human being in the way he thinks. How many mess the guy did but he did not learn from them.
He always against SPLM which can make him unqualify to make contest for South Sudan presidency. How come he said that the independent of South would be asuicid if he is normal. I think the man is very frustrate while he is Arab heart.
If he think that independent of South will be asuicid, then it means that he diswualify himselve from the post or from South.

I believed that Lam Akol is the dead wood.
    Thanks

Dr Lam Akol totally at the stake of confusion. What does it make for sure when in the earlier years of 1991,all about defection with his traitor Riek Machar Teny were in the interests of self determination. I didn’t imagine Lam Akol being at the verge of weighing up the SOUTH SUDAN with the risks to getting Somalised as he put it!

However,it’s all about frustration especially when he hasn’t got the majority in the South to support him.All about this failed man is always a blame against the government of South Sudan. How do you claim the risks happening in the South when Lam Akol surely himself belongs for the risks. You ‘re responsible for this chaos.

    Akol.

Sudan was a Somalisation since independent. What Somalisation are you talking about again? Is it the one you initiated during the interim period?

Puck out with you bribes. You are wasting your time-Sudan is already divided i mean new-two in one .

With this ideology then believe me-you will win only 10% of the south Sudanese votes in the up coming April elections.

South Sudan independence will be suicide for Lam not Southern Sudan because he may not be allowed to live in Southern Sudan to practice his divisive politics of opposition without solutions, so that is what he is actually complaining about. It is not Somalization of Southern Sudan but his exile from an Independent Southern Sudan.

It is not strange to hear such comments from Lam- I heard him talking of weak Government in Southern Sudan and yet he was part of that Government and if he was to change the state of democracy he would have done it because he was at a key position in the Government- Yet he became selfish selling his own people in expense of his own good.
It is unfortunate that Lam compare the ” THE PEOPLE OF GREATER SOUTHERN SUDAN” with Somalia- Our people are organize, peace loving, believe in peaceful co-existence and have a common vision. Such tribal conflict did not exist before but the enemies of peace, Lam being part of them, created this scenario. I believe with unity tribal conflicts will continue to exist in order to prevent people of South Sudan to prosper and that is the vision of these anti-South group. I am quite certain that with secession South Sudan is capable of returning to its peaceful co-existence that was there before, but swept away by the enemies of Peace.
Mr. Lam your statement will instead probe South Sudanese to be united because it is underminding the integrity of the people of Southern Sudan- South Sudan is too big for him to abuse in such away. His statement is premature and selfish.
Southern Sudanese, that is exactly why Lam wants to run for presidency of the South-he wants to advocate for and/ or forge a fake unity. It is not him to decide what your future should be but you as honourable citizens of South Sudan to decide your own fade. It is 50 years now since independent but there is nothing that Unity of Sudan has contributed to improve the lives of Southern Sudanese other than- intentional and grave marginalization.
” I believe South shall never be like Somalia” for we are hetrogenic-Society and can find solutions to our problems easily, South Sudanese are wise and organize, unlike Somalia which is homogenic-society that tends to be small more family then a society.

    Dear Mr. Lam,

Out of all replies posted (18) and going up, none so far has supported your analysis; on the contarary, all bursed out with anger against you expecting from you that, that is the least you could advocate against southern Sudan.
It is better for you to go back to accadamic life as lecturer in The University of Khartoum, where you were well fit before, rather than messing up southern Sudan ever since 1991.

It is time to be very wise indeed. All of us should be working for a prosperous South Sudan. Everyone should be given the chance to voice his/her ideas and excercise freedom of political choice.

For active politicians, electoral plans and programs should be made available to the public. The people in remote areas should be informed in a right and sincere way of the realities and consequences of selection. If we cheat our people in villages, we would be traitors. They should be helped to make an informative choice. The educated should not impose their opinion on the true descison-makers, the right-owners.

Selection has to be made on the ground of commitment, experience and willingness and ability to serving the long-suffering people.

If tribalism is not checked in the whole Sudan in general, and in the South in particular, we should anticipate problems – real ones.

    Oh Ye Southerners UNITE.

I think the title of the news is misleading. This is what Dr. Lam said: “Under the present weak government in the south, calling for secession would be suicide.” The most important phrase here is: “Under the present weak government in the south.”

In other words, Dr. lam is saying that for South Sudan Independece to be viable, we need a change of leadership of the current GoSS. He is aspiring through elections to be that leader of change in the GoSS. He is right because we are seeing many bad things happeneing in the South now under Kiir leadership. Don’t quote Dr. Lam out of context.

Ladies and gentlemt I appreciate your individuals opinions as usually inlcuding the one of your enemy call Akol. However you fail to understand the truth behind the opinion of Lam, technically I will agree with him if GOSS keep silent on the threat of Insecurity. As genuine man, why don’t you ask yourself about the lost lives in South since the signing of CPA, and what is the actually cause of the problem, who is behind it.

Boys and Girls, commenters and contributors, it is not just a matter of pressing keyboard or saying useless words meanwhile the worse activties are existing within our societies. I by myself I welcome the Independent of South Sudan, but I am very concern about the unsettled insecurity which is causing communities to think apart. The future of South Sudan is uncertain not because of leaders or whatsoever. But insecurity is the main factor. Lam’s hint could be more about poor management, poor leadership, corruption, poor development, insecurity and other obvious virus which are facing us. But if we analysis all of these into one basket, it comes to poor leadership. The future of South Sudan is in your hand ladies and gentlement, therefore talk far from descriminating people for being DC, SPLA, NCP, SSDF, UASP and etc member. Lets embrace ourselves as one and fight against the common enemy in order to achieve our goal of democracy. If you come across a mistake lets handle it with respect.

New Year Message continuous to inspire

Time for tribalism has gone, its new year 2010 which is not a time to generalise tribe or community instead of one person. It is time to focus on the real issue far from tribal criticism, political party criticism, leaders criticism, and very far from abuses or insults. We should also debate far from abuses of any single commenter on ST forum, to myself I want to be a man of tolerance, peace, responsbility, respect, forgiveness, love, unity and courage . It is time to get serious and work for the betterment of my nation South Sudan Democratic Republic of Victoria, South Sudan should be call Victoria, because the long struggle is victory, CPA is victory, South Sudan liberation is victory, our insecurity will be a victory, election and referrendom are potential victories. South Sudan future source of hydro electricity power is White nile which has its source at Lake Victoria, unqestionable the name fits.

I didn’t change myself because of pressure or whatsoever, it could be my 2010 resolution, brave man conquers the fear like I did previously. However I come to realised that, I am not truly free if I am taking away and abusing someone else’s freedom of expression and speech, just as I am not free when my freedom is taken from me and been abused. This is why I finally come to reason that, me and the rest of concern Southerns will transformed South Sudan into a country that is not comfortable place for those who opposed to democracy, parliamentary law, parliamentary debate, independent and fair courts. For now lets start new year with fresh mind and positive ideas that will improvement the managment of South Sudan, childish comments must be ignored. Some individual comment aggressively when they are defeated in debate, this spirit must be abandon. We are here to play a game ie you get defeated or you defeat others defends on the article and the extend of your debate, but don’t insult people. This is my new year inspiring message to ST viewers, contributors, pseuds, readers and editor.

Lam Akol might have been drinking when he made the statement. He should withdraw his PhD because he is not thing very smart towards his people, and now he is repeating what is exactly on NCP mind and agenda. Yes, security is not that great in the south, but let Lam asks himself who is fueling the insecurity? What is the role of Lam Akol so called SPLM/DC from what is going on in the south? What assistant his party is recieving to make Southern Sudan insecured?
When truth is out Mr. Lam Akol will spending all his life in the North or in exile. Underline my words, and tomorrow will never come for you.

Oduk, I or (we) Southerners can’t buy it at all. That was a cheap shot. Nice try though. I believed that you are stupid enough beyond your master. It was his statement! Get a real clue okay. Would you take unity instead of Independent of South Sudan State? Anybody could do this after 201. It is because of your master that is why tribalism still in the South right now. After you crooks are all eliminated after 2011, each of us Southerner will realize that our coexistent is in our hand not in any money lover hand like your clueless daddy. It’s true that the current SPLM administration is not good enough to lead us. It’s also true that Dr. Lam Akol is not good enough to lead us.

It is somehow true that we will be better off with the curren
tly bad SPLM than with the ‘undknown/unpredictable/collaborative/divisive/pro NCP SPLM-DC led by Dr. Lam Akol.

Look, he has no confidence. He tells us that secession for South Sudan under SPLM is suicidal, yet he stops short of giving us an optional leader under which secession would be favourable! Secession is what we want! Secession is what Dr. Lam Akol doesn’t want South Sudan to achieve. He’s more obsessed with deriding SPLM than laying down his party’s platform for South Sudan. Don’t tell us how bad SPLM is. We can see that for ourselves! Tell us how SPLM-DC will better serve South Sudan/tackle NCP and looters of our wealth. Persuade us to better trust you as a custodian of our future. Show us that you have us on your mind and stop belittling the only person we see as our ‘messiah’ (Fmr. Lt. General, Hon. Salva Kiir Mayardit).

If Southerners vote for Dr. Lam Akol as GOSS president, he’ll jeopardise/rig/block referendum in favour of united Sudan. A leader who’s so afraid of leading an independent state is not fit to lead us. Dr. Lam Akol is a joke and a shame to be associated with Southern Sudanese.

Vote SPLM in the April elections for GOSS president. Actually, don’t vote for anyone representing a party with ‘C’ in it.

Dr. Lam Akol would gain followers if he talked about SPLM-DC. So far, he’s unpopularising himself even more by always talking about SPLM (of Kiir, Riek & co.).

Remind me of how bad my eyesore is and I’ll hate you more. Tell me that you can help cure my eyesore and you’ll be my friend.

Salva Kiir is greater than Dr. Lam Akol, and that’s how it will always stay.

Dr Lam akol has killed himself by himself politically, many people now including in his own party have lost trust and respect for him, i do not see him being a president or even a minister in south sudan anytime soon, he will even struggle to win the parliamentary seat in his own constituence. Leaders should have patriotic and nationalists pan-africanists, just because you did not get a post in the government does not mean you have to betray your people and sell yourself to Arabs for cheap price, even if you are not a minister you have to prove yourself as a strong leader with a vision for his people, you have to campaign for good governance, nationalism, patriotism, you also have to uphold the freedom and dignity of your people and country, you do not betray them for money or for self interests, Many people admire Lam Akol at one point including me, people thought he can push for south sudan freedom through his new party and also hlep to bring reform to southsudan, Lam Akol should have set himself as a politicians who wants to unite southerners and to bring reform to south sudan system meanwhile fighting for freedom and independece of south sudan, but he failed to do that, instead he connected himself with Arabs and continue to insult and betray the southerners, he has been recieving money from Omer bashir on daily basis, Lam Akol ones talked of how proud he was to bring the issue of self-determination for south sudan into the movement, but now as you have all heard what he said, that south sudan does not deserve independence, is this really what a patriotic southerner have to say? i lost respect for him totally, he is just a dead traitor.
