SPLM pleads to independent candidates not to leave the party
February 3, 2010 (JUBA) – The Secretary General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has pleaded to the party members who have declared independent candidacy to put the party’s interest above other interests.
Seven senior officials of the party have declared their independent candidacy for governorship in their seven respective states out of the ten Southern Sudan states.
Only the three states of Warrap, Lakes and Western Bahr el Ghazal have no independent candidates for governorship.
Hundreds of party officials are also believed to have declared independent candidacy for various parliamentary seats at the national, Southern Sudan and states constituencies.
After the second session of the ongoing Political Bureau meeting in Juba, Amum said a committee would be formed to travel to all the states to try to discourage the independent candidates from contesting against their colleagues who were nominated by the Political Bureau.
Amum said the party would not afford dividing itself into officially nominated and independently contesting candidates, saying those independent comrades should put the party interest first.
Meanwhile the party officials who have declared their independent candidacy expressed that they have made the decision in the interest of the people at the grassroots, describing the Political Bureau’s decision as “unpopular.”
They have criticized the Political Bureau for resisting the democratic change by rejecting the choices of the people and handpicking unpopular individuals, warning that this decision may cost the party dearly by losing majority of its supporters during the elections.
There are growing fears in the party’s leadership that the independent candidates who seem to be more popular on the ground may win most of the SPLM constituencies in the April elections.
Some of the party’s independent candidates have already expressed their intention to temporarily resign from the party in order to contest.
Joseph Bakosoro who declared his independent candidacy for the position of governor in Western Equatoria state was quoted as saying that the “SPLM leadership is aware of the plea and yearns for change in Western Equatoria, but it decided to turn down the will of the people.”
He said that If SPLM leadership forces him to resign from the party, he will submit temporary resignation letter, pending victory in the next upcoming elections.
He further appealed to the SPLM leadership to respect the will of the people, adding that it is only the people of his state who can stop him from contesting.
The National Elections Commission (NEC) and its branch office in Juba have already published the names of those they have qualified to run for the elections including the names of independent candidates.
Observers close to the SPLM Political Bureau said the party’s opinion was divided over the fate of independent candidates with some accepting independent candidacy.
It is however expected that hardliners’ opinion in the party will go through and decide to sack members who will insist on standing as independent candidates.

Loyalty to SPLM must be the number one than looking for money.
This independent candidates are money hunters and there is no way they wil be given candidatcy at this time because they lack SPLM loyalty. Many of them are from NCP as agents and the others are traitors and some of them are impose base on tribal lines.
This indepenedent candidates must retire and cancell their membership in SPLM so that they will be independent. But i doubt if war came, whole of them will go and beg the enemy.
SPLM is not democracy yet,let get out from North and after 2011 many parties will be forms as you guys want.
Thanks

Mr. Amum,
Thanks for your soft diplomatic approach to our comrades who wants to divide the party.
Possibly there is a case to be answered. Two cases infact were genuine, but the rest of Independent candidates aren’t serious. Fortunately, they will be beaten, don’t worry about that.
Interesting enough, some have already shown who they are; they will not listen to your plea. Stop them because of the evidence before your desk (an aid of one of the governors caught with huge money the other day- possibly the NCP money)
Discipline must be inforced!

These are hungry politicians,
The so called independent candidacy is bull shit, this is only dividing the party supporters at all levels, if the SPLM political bureau is not taking good measure against all these individuals who are dividing party then the SPLM will collapse politically.
After election it will be surprise for SPLM seeing all the independent candidates joining NCP or other parties either in the North or South.

Amum has been a confused SG in the administration of SPLM party.SPLM party has no fixed direction to where they are going at the moment. this indicates failure in the party and it is true that independant candidates will be the most successfull candidates in the coming election.
SPLM party need to realise that forming committee to go arroud talking to independent candidates in wasting time and that is ways of creating channals for corruption in south sudan.
when independants candidates happen to win the coming election,SPLM party will have no power over them and that will make an end to SPLM party in south sudan.
this is hand picking candidats results on politicaldecision. No independant candidates will put SPLM interest as priority in their governership.
In WES we are sure that Col.Bakosoro is a winer of the coming election.

Wow!!!!!
Selecting close friends is a good thing to do because if we want to steal,no one will asked question and nobody will take the information to the others comrades or civilians and we called it loyalty in different name. That’s is so cool. I will be reading interesting news everyday in 2010.

The SPLm political forestry seem right growing so much hits over selecting unwanted governors, but the time is not right to the people of south sudan inorder to understood that we are in round dirty and playing a positve game’s on upcoming elections.
The SPLM has a pawor to eliminate those who wanted to run as a independent candidates all over the south. But the questions is these, the NCP brought their candidates for the governorship in the 9 state’s.Are they most be trusted then the SPLM independent candidate’s?we are not in the same boat with NCP the SPLM should nemonate’s two people at list in those 9 State.

I don’t know how I can really get that fucken idiot called Pagan. How can we get rid of him really? He likes money more than his life.
Look When he came to Unity State to solve a problem he was just bribed by that businessman called Taban,by being given money in a big sisal sack and ruined the whole process.
May be God will judge this for he is the only excellent judge.

SPLM is flattering itself. Some members were already having difficulty defending stinking record of the party. For some of these independents, their dismissal will be a blessing in disguise: they will have been relieved from the guilt of leaving the liberating party which has lost its way. Go ahead, PB, and dismiss the lot and then you will have created a formidable opposition in the SSLA. Are there intelligent and strategic-thinking people in the PB? It seems there is none.

Dear brothers
The Sudan people’s liberation movement is not a donkey on which anybody is free to take a joy ride.We know why we fought that is to restore the right and dignity of our people.Whoever doesn’t want to listen to the Party must go wherever he/she likes. They are not suppose to be persuaded. This is not the right time for them to do that.Pagam Amum is right to do that and I am supporting him. Those who claim to be independent candidates are inviting problems again and they might have received money from Arabs.
