Sudan reaffirms readiness for talks with any Darfur group
February 4, 2010 (DOHA) — Sudanese delegation to Darfur peace process expressed today readiness to negotiate with any rebel group willing to hold direct talks.
Gathered since January 24 in the Qatari capital Doha, rebel delegations failed to reach a joint position on how to discuss with the Sudanese government. Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) delegation suggests integrating the other groups while they reject merger and propose coordination.
The other rebel delegations in Doha are the Sudan Liberation Movement – Revolutionary Forces (SLM-RF) called Tripoli group and Addis Ababa group including some SLA factions and the United Resistance Front (URF) of Bahr Idriss Abu Garda.
“We are ready to negotiate with those who are present (in Doha) and ready for negotiations, whether they want to hold separate talks or want to negotiate all together in one delegation, they are welcome also,” said Amin Hassan Omer, head of government delegation.
Omer stressed they will discuss all the issues including the power and wealth sharing, security arrangements, land and justice, without exception.
The mediation has asked the rebel groups to formulate their positions and proposals to end the seven year conflict in Darfur; also they have been requested to put out their response on Saturday.
SLM-RF spokesperson Abdella Mursal said they are ready for direct peace talks with government. He also said they can merge with Addis Ababa group but excluded to accept merger with JEM adding they can only coordinate with them.
On the other hand, Ibrahim Beng the spokesperson of Addis Ababa group said they are still discussing their vision for the peace talks. He added that the initiative they intend to propose would make a breakthrough.
Sudanese president Omer Al-Bashir was yesterday in Doha for talks with the Qatari Emir on the peace process. He reaffirmed the support of his government to Qatar’s sponsorship of peace process.

You Darfurians, you need to come together otherwise you will get nothing out of any peace talks with those guys in Khartoum. Learn from Southerners and from your own brothers who are already in Khartoum and complaining of non-implementation of DPA; because the agreement itself is weak and has no grantees. Some of Southerners signed agreements but it did not acheive any thing and they had to rejoin their brothers, this was when South was able to get most important CPA in the world.
When you come together, you will even be able to get Self-Determination for your people or at least some sort self-rule.
Best of luck to you, and I will alway pray that you get back your lost land and peace come to Darfur.

Coming up with a unified platform to enter the negotiations is the unique way out from this complicated situation. But I doubt that the government of Sudan is ready to give the concessions to reach to a peaceful compromise for the Darfur problem… the huge presence of the Sudanese delegation to Doha not means Khartoum readiness to negotiate the different rebel groups, it just a propaganda for electoral goals ,, since NCP terrified by the augmenting challenge and defiance made by Yasir Urman …. Face to divergences amongst the NCP supporters in the provinces….. NCP knows very well brokering peace with Darfur rebel means participation of angry, depressed darfurians who vote intensively against NCP to kick it out of the power …. That why I believe gathering to doha just for public relation as said by mr Scott Gratiot e US special Envoy to Sudan..
