Khartoum’s court rules in favour of independent candidates

February 10, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – Independent candidates are allowed by the court’s ruling to contest in the upcoming general elections in April.

Earlier, objections were filed with the Elections Commission against the independent candidates.

The Khartoum State Elections Commission has published its final list of nominees including independent candidates for the State governorship, the state’s Legislative Assembly and the National Assembly.

Speaking to the United Nations sponsored radio, Miraya FM, the head of the Khartoum State Elections Commission, Musa Mahgoub, said the final list was fixed after the courts ruled on the objections over nominations of independent candidates.

Musa Mahgoub also called on all the independent candidates in the state to come to Khartoum Elections Commission on Thursday to choose the symbols they wish to use in the elections.

The final lists of candidates for the upcoming general elections will be announced nationwide soon.

In a separate news development, the Supreme Court of Sudan ruled against objections raised against presidential candidacy of President Omer Al-Bashir for the Republic of Sudan and President Salva Kiir for Southern Sudan.
