Southern Students protest dismissal of independent candidates

By Ngor Arol Garang

February 18, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Hundred of students in the three Southern universities of Juba, Bahr el Ghazal and Upper Nile have protested SPLM political bureau decision dismissing its members who sought to run upcoming elections independently besides official nominees.

The decision taken by the SPLM Political bureau in Juba baring those who have chosen to contest as independent candidates not to use SPLM slogans or logos, “is unfair and divisive,” said William Kiir Mawien from Warrap State at Juba university in Khartoum.

He criticized the decision acknowledging that these kinds of attitudes and emotional characters are not new in the SPLM leadership; it is the same attitudes that caused 1991 split.

“As we all know, the situation of 1991 drew us back in number of ways, Therefore, SPLM should always to be careful in whatever decision it considers to take because; it is people’s party and cliques of individuals should not take it as family or friendly organization by threatening others,” said another participant who identified himself as William Deng Boldit from Australia.

Some members of the SPLM at the apex of leadership need to shape their attitudes and characters to keep the party united, he said

Also, he said, President Kiir needs not to support wrong policies that may jeopardize the popularity of the party. The members, whom they are threatening today, were the ones who were doing the fight before the peace accord was reached in Nairobi-Kenya in 2005, he adds.

“The SPLM leadership particularly Mr. Chairman himself knows that commanders like General Dau, George Athor, Alfred Lodo Gore and many others, fought a terrible war with the enemy in all corners of Sudan,” he commented.

Therefore he said, let‘s rescue this party by advising Mr. Secretary General “who spearheaded all messes and the members of SPLM political bureau to take correct measures instead of wrong ones”.

“We all shed blood in this land in order to bring the democratic transformation in place. Such unpopular decisions by political bureau will increase the popularity of independency because times for threatening and intimidation are gone, and we need a true democracy that we have been fighting for in all these years,” he stressed.

Echoing the same concerns was Sebit Oduok, who said studying medicines at Upper Nile University by saying “down, down, down those who insist no prevalence of democracy”.

Calling for immediate resignation of the SPLM Secretary General, Pagan Amum, he said such decision is born out of nothing than emotions and that SPLM will face it rough as it will encourage coalition against official nominees in favor of either independents or other political parties.

He posed why SPLM allowed millions of southern population die if it was not because of what he termed as “repressive acts employed by successive Khartoum regimes”.

    Dear Readers,

Yes, any sane people doing political analysis or electoral analysis based on this SPLM’s “unfair and divisive” practices would agree SPLM has failed in the public opinion of the mass in south sudan. The intransigence and belligerence SPLM has introduced “brain dead” politics in south sudan. Is 2.5 millions lives a waste?
Most independent candidates are hardcore freedom fighters during the bush years and the deserve respects from a dictatorial Kiir & Pagan Amum. Amum stays true to his useless paganism!!

South Sudan we have been oppress by minority Arab then came a dictatorial SPLM; South Sudan the land of Oppressess. Oppression is the unjust or cruel exercise of power. Typically, when we think of oppression in the United States we think of the Civil Rights movement, and the unjust treatment of blacks that led to it.

Today, there is still oppression in South Sudan, but it will fails because people of South Sudan are smart people who know the difference between just oppression and democratic system. as they saw it not thing good will come from SPLM as long as they fail from achieving united Sudan, or socialise transformation of the country, they do not want any democratic system But they will fail. GOD know!

    Folks,

The messes the Independent candidates are facing reveal the corrupt and incompetent of the political Bureau spearheaded by Pagans called Amum and Salvage Kiir.
They should have not ruin the nomination by nominating incapable and unpopular candidates in expense of the better ones preferred by the communities.
The Secret General Amum even did admit that there were errors committed by the Political bureau but still went a head to disown the independent candidates.
    “Shame on them”.

Salvage Kiir and his kitchen cabinet who made this grave mistake will pay dearly.

This is indeed the right time for South unity including the hyenas who rebel against SPLM in 1991.
Kiir should seek to unite the party but not divide it through his weak rule.
The SPLM nominated candidates should have been withdrawn and the right one chosen as directed by the grassroots.

Those SPLM political bureau who cause this controversy must be brought to justice.

” Time for Kiir to go has just knock on his door given his poor leadership”.

But who can replace him? A malfunctioning deputy Dr Risk Machar would be the worst Southsudan would imagine.

    God help us!!!

Where do we derived the term political Bureau? What kind of government do they represent? Who presiding during the political bureau meeting? If you don’t understand all that, it is a communist system where the political bureau is the only voice in the party. What they decided trickle down to duties and ministers. that system is way backward and I don’t think those redcoated members in that chamber do understand what they are upto. Protesting is good but you have to be careful about what they can encounter. Some sort of tiananmen square episode can possibly happen. The commission by which the political bureau can grant and approved the hardline to crash the protesters like the way Deng Xioaping of China did in Tiananmen Square. Those are tactic of brutal and aggressive governmnet to their mass so they shot them down and make frustrated.

I don’t see the different between Al Bashir party and the clique wit within the SPLM. They start when Telar and Aleu were insisting with inconsistant about the data of the plane, they were demised and smeared as being associate with NCP. The arrogant with political bureau is more alike to what the northerners were been doing to southerners for years. They (political Bureau) become authoritative club amongst the masses of south sudanese. A sort of totalitarain government run by those who do not object to each other when they propose or command on principle. By the way, political bureau crash those who do not accept their philosophy or annihilate them or make them suffer. That is the core goal and main strategy with that club. Careful, careful innocent people.

    William Kiir Mawien,

Please do restrain yourself for a second if you are advocating for the relieved independents. What in your mind really do you wants the SPLM political bureau to do when these independents refused to backed down their decisions even after long talking with them.

I thought you are witnessing what these independents were calling for when they say they need democracy and freedom to be given to them by the political bureau which was actually denied to them. SPLM is a democratic party which of cause puts him in the position of doing nothing or unless you mean they should be arrested which is wrong either. They knock and they are given what they were longing so why saying SPLM should have not.

You should have known Mawien that there are rules and regulations the National Electrol Commission have puts forward to guide every candidate when he or she’s form is accepted. What the SPLM had done is legitimate because it will granted these independents their rights to compaign they way the wanted.

What are you mouthing your mouth for really; choas and confusion? Well we can’t have SPLM candidates, SPLM-DC candidates and SPLM independent candidates running in the same post if that what you fighting for. No.

You are committing a wrong here is you lumping all independents heroes because some are not such as the wife of traitor Riak Machar. But let say your mentioned independents are our heroes which of cause they are, does that means to you they should not be abided by the party regulations. I wish they should have known before that it takes a while to actually builds the heroness, but less than a second to ruin it.

What is important now is for everybody to work for the interests of south sudan independence, we do not all have to be in one party, this is a multi-party country and we want a multi-party democratic space, as long as all candidate will work for the best interest of souths udan and safeguard its independence then there is no problem with some candidates going it their own way.

Every one is free to set their party in accordence with the law and constitution requirements, not everybody has to be in one party, also not every body can be the president or governor, if everybody now stand up from within the SPLM and within other parties and all of them say they want to be independent candidates, what do you think this will look like, what will the present independent say about this, if every one wants to be like them? will they even get space for themselves to be seen or heard? yes their should be reform of the selections within the SPLM, it has to be based on the popularity of candidates on the ground, so next time a primary election process shouild be carried out at the grassroot to identifiy popular candidates, but even if this happen do you think no other people will come up as independent candidates? many will still come up and be independent candidates, this is just selfishness of this independent candidates.

People should know that those who decide to stand in the election as independent candidates are working to harm the SPLM program of liberating the People of South Sudan. We can’t all sit in that single chair. So spilting the votes that the SPLM expects from the people is harming our cause. This is not the end of the election. Why don’t people like Dau wait for the next round if they have the interests of the people at heart?
