UN-AU joint mediator lauds Kiir’s intervention in Darfur peace efforts

July 16, 2010 (PARIS) — The United Nations-African Union chief Mediator Dijibril Bassole today welcomed the announcement made by Sudan people Liberation Movement (SPLM) that its leader Salva Kiir will soon initiate contacts with Darfur rebel leaders to convince them on joining peace talks.

“This is a tremendous move and will reflect positively on the country as a whole because Darfur stability is important for Sudan” Bassole told Sudan Tribune.

The chief mediator confirmed that he had personally requested Kiir’s mediation between Khartoum and the Darfur rebels.

Kiir, regional president of south Sudan and leader of the former rebels, has “decided that the SPLM is going fully to be involved in bringing peace in Darfur,” SPLM deputy Secretary General Yasir Arman told reporters in Khartoum.

Arman said that his Kiir is the only party that can talk to the leaders of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and the Darfur rebels and act as a reliable channel for messages between the warring parties.

He named the rebel groups to be contacted as the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) headed by Khalil Ibrahim and Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) led by Abdel-Wahid Al-Nur.

SLM-Nur has flatly rejected going to the negotiation table before establishing security on the ground while JEM withdrew from talks with Khartoum last May accusing the Sudanese government of violating the framework agreement they signed earlier this year.

Both groups are viewed as crucial for achieving peace in the restive region.

“I am confident that president Kiir will spare no effort in convincing all sides to come to the negotiation table and secure an accord that will bring lasting peace to Darfur” Bassole said.

“I will work closely with my brothers at the SPLM to assist them in this endeavor” he added.

Yesterday JEM said that it will soon send a delegation to Juba for talks with the SPLM on efforts to bring peace to Darfur. The group however appeared skeptical that Khartoum would be willing to offer any concessions.

Clashes between JEM and Sudanese armed forces have escalated since JEM suspended its participation in the talks lowering hopes of a quick peace deal.

The NCP is always suspicious on SPLM/A moves to bring peace for Sudan; its because they beleive that its only the SPLM/A under the leadership of late Dr. Garang who inspired the people of the margin to ask for their brith and civil right. The move for me is not bad as long as Kiir will agree with all people of the margin to remove NCP from power, because the only legitimacy that keeps NCP on power is CPA, without it they would have gonne long ago.
NCP if it smell any move from Sudan political forces, it immediately cry out, blaaaa, they are against the comprehensive peace agreement, which is not true but they are afraid to be thrown out and kept accountable for the killings of the innocent people in Sudan.

Bassole who is turning every stone to become peace hero after he was pocketed by the NCP should push for convincing Khartoum regime to stop the killing and disarm its militias instead of asking the rebel to join peace talks flatly before their demands were made. Basole you will grow moss on your feet waiting Abdul wahid to join Doha talks just eat the Arab and Sudan government money and join the business world like Mbike.
