August 18, 2010 (JUBA) – The first Southern Sudan General Students Union has been established this week in the region’s capital, Juba, during a four-day conference attended by hundreds of students from various students unions in the ten states of Southern Sudan and Abyei.

The General Union brings together all the students bodies from all the states under one national umbrella.

The conference was officially opened on behalf of the President by the Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

The conference after days of deliberations successfully passed the Union’s constitution on 11th August which was followed by the election of both the executive and oversight bodies for the General Union.

In his opening remarks, Machar told the students body that the Union was already by law incorporated into the constitutions of Sudan and of Southern Sudan and that the government would support its establishment and support its activities.

He welcomed representatives of all the state students unions from the ten states of Southern Sudan for converging in Juba for the event and wished them democratic deliberations on passing of the constitution and elections of their leadership.

He stressed the importance of the General Union and its decentralized state students unions in the ten respective states.

The membership of the Union includes primary, secondary and university students as well as university graduates who are only two years from the time they graduated from the university.

The conference elected Emmanuel Lobari from Central Equatoria state as the first Chairman of the Southern Sudan General Students Union and Peter Yien from Jonglei state as the Deputy Chairman. Peter Riek from Unity state was elected the Secretary General of the General Union while the position of Deputy Secretary General was won by Ayuel Ayuel of Warrap state. The number of the executive positions was 21.

The conference also elected 84 members of an established Council, which serves as the parliament for the Union. Bang Wiu Kor of Warrap state was elected the Speaker of the Council while Gatwech Ruei Kuoth from Upper Nile state was elected the Clerk of the Council.

The Union will be playing the role of organizing students all over Southern Sudan and Abyei and making sure that the challenges faced by students are looked into and their education and welfare is supported by the government.

One of the resolutions passed by the General Union during the conference is that the students’ body will also play the role of mobilizing students in the region to vote for separation of the South in the upcoming referendum.

Appreciation to all students. The future of this nation – South Sudan – belongs to you all. Hard work ranges from mobilizing Southern students studying in various institutions to vote for separation and study hard as well. Leave no stone unturned.

    Dear All,
I will first appreciate the effort made by the citizens of semi autonomous region of Southern Sudan to come up with such a wonderful union at this critical time. But if southerners are to be wise enough in seeing things clear, then they would have dectected the changes that had happened in the universities yearly intake of 2010, where 3/4 of the southern applicants were rejected regardless of their performances. To me, these are some of the ways to frustrate us on academical ground (cool war). My appeal to GOSS, MOEST together with the students’ union is to open their eyes in this regard.

I appreciate the founders and brains behind this idea and to my supprise in the Executive and council I don’t see some states mention like for instance my state -lakes.
Congretulation to elected Executive and Council members in the World of leadership. The future of our country South Sudan currently lie in our hands , should mess up at the critical moment we shall all die as second citizen. Before we look into students affairs problem I would encourage us to first focus on referendum and we look back latter when we are free from Arabisation and Isamisation from North regime.

Was that name choose by Students themselves or Southern Sudan government? To elaborate you very well, such name should be for military students who are ready for marshall field or training field. As individual, i would wish that name to be change as ”South Sudan Universities Students Union” (SSUSU) to sound better, because it give good impression.

Well, Southern Sudan is still pre-mature in defining some words. we need to first get full meaning of the words we are trying to used because some words give bad impression or image.

For the case of putting all states of Southern Sudan universities under one umbrella. We should the above names.

Thanks to all commenters who decompaign such names.
