Sudden death of Lakes State’s police chief mourned by citizens in Rumbek

01 October 2010 (JUBA) – Thousands of citizens in Rumbek town, the provincial capital of Lakes State, gathered on Tuesday to mourn the death of Lakes State’s Police Commissioner, Brigadier Chol Alaak Ajak, who died on Monday at Juba Teaching Hospital Lakes state.

Alaak was pronounced dead at 1 am local time on Monday. Eye witnesses said that Alaak had suddenly dropped dead in front of his room at Juba Grand Hotel.

Lakes State’s Minister of Information, Communication, Youth, Culture and Sports, Marik Nanga Marik, said that the late Commissioner had traveled to Juba for a meeting and that he did not show any sign health problems.

The late police commissioner had been serving with Lakes State’s government since the term of former Governor Daniel Awet Akot, who was later succeeded by the current elected governor Chol Tong Mayay.

Alaak was reputed to be a man of high education level and cordial personality. Nanga acknowledged the deceased’s efforts in improving security in Lakes state town.

The governor of Lakes State, Chol Tong, said that Alaak’s death had taken him by surprise. Tong expressed condolences to the family and friends of the late commissioner.

The deceased commissioner, who took office in 2009, hailed from Bor town in Jonglei State.
