SPLM Secretary General Amum urges Unity State to vote for separation

By Bonifacio Taban Kuich

January 4, 2011 (BENTIU) – The Secretary General of South Sudan’s ruling party the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), visited Unity State on Monday to make local citizens the region’s independence referendum, which begins on Sunday.

Pagan Amum, who is also the Government of Southern Sudan’s minister for peace and implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) urged Unity State civilians to vote wisely.

The CPA ended over two decades of conflict between the north and south and gave the region the right to secede through next week’s referendum after a six year period of sharing power and wealth with the Khartoum government.

Amum said that the struggle of Southern began in 1955 during Anglo-Egyptian rule in Sudan , when the south asked the colonial powers and northern parties to give the region its own administration. This request was resisted and downplayed, he said.

The southern minister called upon the state authorities to fight the self determination of South Sudan through peaceful dialogue. He added that 25% of the total populations in the South during South referendum registration in Unity State were from Bentiu.

At a rally attended by Amum the state chairperson of the Khartoum-based National Congress Party, Bill Charaow Kuel, has handed over the names of 750 party members to the SPLM deputy chairperson on Monday. Kuel said “from the effect of 3rd January 2011 onward, we will be working hand in hand with SPLM to make the South independent successfully.”

Unity State governor Taban Deng Gai urged citizens to make sure they know how and where to vote. A turn out of over 60% of registered voters is needed for the vote to be valid as per the referendum law passed by Sudan’s National Assembly.

He urged people to take the pride in voting for the separation south Sudan and the creation of a new independent state.

He added that, “we are the majority in the South to vote for the South independent and encouraging the state population to be the mother of country for the South secession.”

Most observers and indications from the south show that a vote for independence is the most likely outcome.

    Zechariah:

In reality no one wants to see the new born nation plunging into Somalism or civil war, and for God sake is forbidden. And it’s not about power greedy or takes over.Telling a polish that he/she is making mistakes sometimes will sound kind of bad advice in his/her ears’s drums, and can’t comply to it, but infacts are 100% faulted.

People of South Sudan have suffered thus much and wanted to see a visible change in terms of democracy, poverty eradication, public equity share and equality in all level of government institutions. If I am not wronged, 90% of ministers and their deputies (DG) are from one tribe; and to rightfully proven my point read the link below from Sudan tribune’s about the just GoSS Presidential decree appointment.

    http://www.sudantribune.com/Newly-appointed-officials-in-South,37117

Again, 90% of the newly appointees commissioners are from the same one tribe, and what a democracy government!

Like I said coup detete is forbidden for the God’s sake, but moving through the same path of 6 years a go can be disliked even by a small baby though he/she can’t attempt any coup detete.

People of South Sudan are just demanding their natural right and that was what pushed them took their arm struggle against Khartoum. People of South Sudan can’t/ couldn’t, and will not afford another Arabinization in the future nation. To avoid Somalism in the future nation such points must be implemented:

We need to call an earlier election with in 6-18 months right after independent in which time South Sudanese will elect whom ever, and which ever party they favoured to lead them.

We need to ensure that power is balanced at various levels of governments.

Corruption is totally condemned and who ever found practising must be brought to book.

Nepotism, tribalism, and favouritism are left to devil acts.

Whom you know kind of hiring policy is degenerated.

Professionals and scholars are recognised and given full packages.

Developmental projects are implemented rather falling into the hands of hand picked illiterates.

In reverse; people of South Sudan will have no choice but to ask for a second liberation from with in South Sudan, and this is not a coup detete if that is what nightmares you Zachariah!!! It will be just a 1 week show if prolonged.

It’s something a civilized person wants to have enjoyed all over the world, and I think you are among the civilized ones.

    Chuker Machar,
If it is true that 25% of the registered potential voters are from Unity State, then people have right to be worried.
Unity State is a militias-dominated state. I totally agree with Mr.Deng’s comment. Secondly, are you really telling us that your Governor Mr. Taban a former militia turned SPLM is doing a good job? I certainly doubted it. This man must be carefully watched. We do not want this high turn out in Unity State to be another disasterous Nasir-faction-like rebellion. The people of Southern Sudan have been waiting for this one-time event. And we do not want any body to hijack this God’s given opportunity.
Finally and last, but not certainly the least, May almighty God creator of heaven and Earth bless the long-suffering and long-objectified people of Southern Sudan and guided them into glorious promised land of freedom comes January,9, 2011.
