Unknown gunmen kill five in Eastern Equatoria

By Ijoo Bosco

Feb 15, 2011 (TORIT) – Unknown gunmen ambushed and killed five civilians along the road between Torit to Chukudum road on Tuesday of Eastern Equatoria, a local official has told Sudan Tribune.

The Budi county commissioner, Charles Atul, said the situation after the killing remains tense but that soldiers from the South Sudan army (SPLA) have been deployed to the area and some have begun tracking the culprits..

Atul explained that the passenger bus was carrying over 16 people from Kapoeta town where they had been to visit their in-laws. The group were making their way back home to Chukudum town when they were attacked.

He added that the five people killed had attempted to run away from the car. Among them was a paramount chief, two boys and two women.

Commissioner Atul said, after hearing of the attacks he ordered SPLA soldiers to the county to rescue the situation. However he said that no suspects have been arrested but SPLA was pursuing the suspects.

He said that he had previously asked the state government to deploy SPLA soldiers to hot spots along the road due to the number of attacks in the area.

The state government and the county authority have condemned the act and called for the formation of an investigation into the killings along the road, which is a is major highway connecting the South Sudan to neighboring Kenya.

According to county commissioner Atul, the driver of the car escape unhurt but tried his best to rescue the lives of his passengers. However, the tyre of the car was shot making it impossible for him to drive away from the attackers.

In July South Sudan is due to become independent after a referendum held last month. Insecurity through robbery cattle raiding and rebel groups is expected to be one the major problems the new country will face.
