Sudanese female activist claims to be gang-raped by security men

February 24, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – A Sudanese female activist has appeared bare-faced in a Youtube video and claimed that she was raped by three members of Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS).

The 24-year-old Safiya Eshaq, a member of an anti-government youth group known as Grififna, said she was kidnapped, assaulted and gang-raped by plain-clothed security men on February 13th, nearly two weeks after she participated in anti-government protests.

Small anti-government protests erupted in Khartoum in late January as a response to a campaign organized via the internet by youth groups inspired by the popular revolts convulsing the Middle East and North Africa.

The protests were swiftly crushed by the police and members of the NISS who arrested dozens in the process, some of them still detained.

“After the rallies of January 30 I felt I was being watched…and I even told my friends that there are people watching me,” Safiya said in the video.

She recounted that her abduction took place when she was in Al-Hurriyah Street in central Khartoum at a bookstore.

Eshaq was then taken by plain-clothed men and bundled off to a “small white car.” She said she was beaten and taken to a security office in North Khartoum where she was physically assaulted and interrogated on her relationship with Girifna.

She passed out when one of the security men beat her as she tried to resist his attempt to remove her cloth.

“When I woke up I found two men holding my legs and a third penetrating me,” she said.

“I was in a lot of pain…they were three taking turns on me,” she added as her face cringed in pain.

Saffiya told Reuters in an interview from the capital of south Sudan Juba, to which she fled for fears of reprisal, that she got a doctor report confirming she was raped and reported the case to the police who first tried to talk her out of reporting the incident.

“They told me it would be better for me not to continue with this and were threatening me but after I brought the doctor’s report they accepted it,” she said.

“I am not a strong person but I know there are so many women who are sexually assaulted but they keep silent. I want to tell girls like me to speak out, to let the world know what kind of regime this is,” she said.

Eshaq said she never returned to her home in Khartoum to avoid endangering her family.

A source from NISS denied to Reuters that their forces had anything to do with the alleged rape, saying “All the papers are falsified.”

The reported rape incident sparked furious reactions in the Sudanese cyberspace, with some calling on the government to open an investigation into the case.

The Sudanese government and its allied militias have allegedly used mass rape as a weapon in their abusive counterinsurgency against rebels in the western region of Darfur, in which the UN says more than 300,000 were killed and millions displaced since the conflict broke out in 2003.

International aid organizations were expelled from Darfur for reporting rape incidents.

    Mr. Bashir,

You must washout about NISS otherwise, what they have done to Safiya Eshaq is jeopardizing (Endangering) your situation in the Hague (Icc) Court.

You will soon follow the food steps of your gone colleagues, the Egyptian and Tunsian president.

Again wasn’t this your story on the 23rd !!

    Wednesday 23 February 2011
Sudan used sexual violence against female activists, right group says

So you will get my same reply :

Thats your proof – one women raped and now you accuse the government of Sudan of using rape as a weapon – and because of a you-tube video !!!

Its a tragedy that she went through this and the persons responsible should be punished. But to accuse the government of using it systematically is pushing it too far. i.e an agenda !

There is a rape occurring every 25 seconds in the USA according to statistics. Does that mean the US is using it as a weapon against women ?

Because one individual perpetrated a hideous crime does not implicate the entire state. The SPLM raped and killed tens of Shulluk a few months ago. Does that mean the SPLM is ethnically cleansing the Shulluk ? http://english.aljazeera.net/video/africa/2010/12/201012237023933452.html

    How about this *****HEADLINE*****

SOUTH SUDAN POLICE TRAINEES ‘RAPED AND BEATEN TO DEATH’.

As many as 100 websites have issued this news – except Sudan Tribune – i wonder why? – Oh that’s right it only looks to criticism North Sudan and hide all negative news about South Sudan. ‘SUDANTRIBUNE IS A NON PROFIT WEB SITE BASED IN FRANCE. ITS GOAL ARE TO PROMOTE PLURAL INFORMATION, DEMOCRATIC AND FREE DEBATE ON SUDAN.’ Yeah right what a joke.

Simple psychology – women, men or children who are raped go through a traumatic experience. Some are scared for life and unable to express what happened. They can barley repeat what happened to anyone, let alone go on You-tube and talk about it in detail so soon after an attack.

Absolutely shameful to Bashir’s regime, how can your government do such acts to his own citizen. It is now very clear that all the NISS criminal are following the acts of their indicted leader but soon they gonna put their asses out of this country.
Your days are numbered now that, rape cases is becoming a tool of torture for young Sudanese girls.
The wicked will never go unpunished !!!

Heeeeeeee Sam, have you heard whatever Namaa said to you the NCP followers?
Since your mounth is very sharp than the vagina of a prostitude woman, can you answer the questions that Namaa posed?
If I were you, I could not even open my mouth due to shame. How can the country’s watchdogs(NISS) rape a woman whom they are protecting being you are one of them. According to me, Security is for the people, by the people and in the people. It is similar to rape your own daughter at home.
    Shame on you Sam Eto.
women were protesting against your oppression and your bad habit. Yet instead, you in turn arrest them and rape, is it true?
You are completely son of devil including your begotten father Al-Bashir. Actually, your time is going to an end. As you are seeing women protesting against you, the whole Khartoum is going to be set on fire soon after declaration of South independence in July 2011. Because you don’t know who gave birth to you. If you need a woman, please ask her in a peaceful manner not using violence.

    Guys
We should look at this kind of situation analyse it before we can start giving our opinion. The girl is well educated and member of organisation many of us don’t know what it stand for. Thousands of our girls have been suffering in northern jails even in Juba our sweet web site tribune never write about it why just this girl? Many of our women was mistreated beaten raps in Juba by our own police, security just because of their cloths. I was witness two situation SPLA MP beating two of our women out side mango night club for reason I didn’t know, and two weeks later I was passing by Juba bridge day time near by place I think it was for drinking water just near bridge at Kator side I saw 4 SPLA was beating girl so bad I couldn’t hold my self I went to them asking why they are beating the girl, the said because of her cloths when I asked them did we have shria law here in south Sudan? the next thing was me I found myself was curbed by my nick my eyes glass was taken my bag was searched they found like 1600 SP on the back they took the money my Iphone mp3 camera was taken but when they found my Norwegian Passport they stop started showing it to each others and put all my things back except money they told me to disappear from the place or I will face another situation I went near by water tanks and call my powerful friend I told him what happened to me then he send four people to come to help me and got some of money back. They found out those SPLA were there to gourd the bridge the said, and that was police job. The girl was not longer there she ran when they turned on me. If we are not going to be careful many people will come from north with this kind of story mean while we still have big one need to be fix home . We can’t fix anybody problem when we still have the same problem home. There for I am calling over our women in south Sudan to vote for me in our next election I will give the women all power because everybody can claim they fought in bush for us and bring us the country in golden plate , but the reality will remain that without our women that we mistreated them that much we could have what will call South Sudan, their voice was the one is going to make us first class citizen they voted 67% in referendum without them we still will be second class citizen in our own land. For last 50 years we fought jellaba in borders of other country we didn’t win by war, we won by peaceful negotiation. Our SPLA can’t win any war what they good at ambush people beating women the proof is Gorge Athor and LRA those are guys with guns are killing our innocent people under their watch. We are living in 21 century don’t let fake politician to fool you people vote for new generation vote for me in next election I will make you proud of your country.
