Mr. Amum conspicuous silence is worrying

By Isaiah Abraham

June 4, 2011 — Southern Sudan has gone through difficult times in its turbulent contemporarily history. We have before us a choice of going to war to defend our motherland or talk while Arabs curb away our rich and beautiful pieces of land using gun points. The Juba leadership and the public were beaten by events in Abyei in that the influential top figures of Southern Sudan were left with few options. The dilemma then is this: here around the corner (few weeks in fact) the Big Occasion of our lives, then a stab in the back by an archenemy of our people, should the South at this stage turn from the journey or should we eat the humble pie of aggression, abuses and humiliation until after July. The author sees no point of ‘turning our cheeks’ to Arabs or go public to swear that our leadership will not return fire or strike back under any circumstances. This inauthentic and unreal if not an oversight statement that doesn’t augur well to the public given the damage and lost Southern territory to Arabs

But as if that isn’t enough, Mr. Pagan Amum, the SPLM Secretary General went underground or hiding at a crucial time when his voice is badly needed. This man has never shy of speaking honey and butter about what is best for the people of Southern Sudan. The public is prodding as to what had happened to the fearless, the very Caleb of Southern Sudan, the hero of heroes and the Messi of Southernona.

When Comrade Pagan opens his mouth, the National Congress Party (NCP) scampers for media refuge and the smearing campaign against him and the entire Southern Sudan. Dr. Barnaba can talk yes but he lacks imagination, he’s too economical with information and not assertive. Mr. Amum uses information forums to speak to the people on what hasn’t even been said and should have been said. His silence therefore has left a huge vacuum to the Government of the people of Southern Sudan.

Speculations are that Mr. Amum isn’t well and is somewhere in one of our neighbors countries recuperating, but that isn’t enough to be believed. Others say Mr. Amum is a devastated man after his alarm earlier in February this year was ridiculed by some within his party and largely by the so-called Opposition Groups. Recall Mr. Amum charged that Khartoum has a mature plan to weaken Southern Sudan government using proxy ways. True to his words, we had had rampant militia insurgent cropping up, provocation through large scale build up of troops along South-North border and economic blockage. I don’t know whether there is an apologist who could refute him today.

But the most considered speculation suggests that Mr. Amum don’t want to be seen as contradicting his boss, Mr. Kiir about peaceful resolution of the conflict in Abyei and occupation of areas South of Higilij and Renk County. Gen. Kiir as everyone knows is a strict disciplinarian; you dare him you risk it! Remember when he gagged Hon. Aleu Ayieny Aleu when the later goes against the so-called official position that the fateful chopper that killed Dr. John Garang came down through natural circumstances, and not any foul play. Mr. Amum like me isn’t yet a student of new found school of Oslo for a peace laureate. In fact there is nothing like ‘taking anyone to war’; we are already there without the big man pulling anyone.

Strictly speaking however, there is another theory that could make anyone silence. The Southern Security forces especially the top brass at Bilpam have a portion of blame to the current military set back. The military job is to protect the national territorial of the people, if they could not get their military intelligence right and allow the Northern Army to build, hit and entrenched, what does that tell us about the capability of our men in uniform to secure our land. The Commander In Chief of our army has largely becoming nominal and the gap would have filled if Mr. Amum hasn’t been mum. That was just a by the way because this isn’t a time to blame but to start fix the problem.

Please Gen. James Oath, and Gen. Mamur don’t listen to Kiir new found song and affidavit of not taking the South to war. Who told him that others before him were war mongers? To sacrifice Abyei on the altar of diplomatic commission is suicidal and unacceptable! Abyei must be brought back by the barrel of the gun, the same way it was taken. I heard Garang saying the same lines when your rights are forceful taken away. July 9 whatever will not be affected whether fire ranges in Abyei or not. We don’t need the North to recognize us; already we are. Make reason for Cde Pagan to talk

Abyei youths hence must lead this process. They failed then to join the war but to school. They are Southerners 100% and their place in the military especially among non commission officers and junior officers is missing. Academic papers alone and international community wrath will not move Arab forces out of the Southern land called Abyei. Let those who stayed way then still keep away, men from Toposa, Lotuho, Bari, Nuer, Chollo, Dinka, Azande, Murle, Mundari and Acholi finish the liberation job. Faint hearted and ‘women’ are to shut up! Mr. Amum over to you!

I strongly supported President Salva Kiir’s comments not to take the South back to war because of Abyei.

For those people who are singing the songs of war with the North let your Children fight this time. Many of these military thugs are looting army’s salaries. And you expected them to fight? This is bulshit. I strongly appealed to our army not to listen these thugs who always run away with their money. In fact, there is no reason why you should let yourself get kill while nobody will take care of your children. I have observed this while I was at home.

Yes, indeed Ustaz Amum silence is a very worrying issue.

I have actually decided in the past not to make any written comments on this site and it has been a while since that decision thinking that Sudantribune may improve it professionalism. I had many reasons topped by lack of accountability for Sudantribune’s under news/articles comment writers for attempting to cease my participation. I did propose two suggestions for Sudantribune in the past to improve itself as a responsible news and productive ideas provider to the public.

The two suggestions were: 1 Sudantribune should regulate the use of true identification for its readers as an essential criteria to meet and participate on the site by making the contributions with written comments. 2 punishing those who refused to be abide by the regulation and therefore, ban them or terminate their participation should they fail to respect the regulation. I am not here calling for the policing or censorship on this site, I am gravely concern only about the promotion of the damaging ideas. Anyway I have returned to make some comments even though Sudantribune has not changed and the behaviours of a tiny minority who managed to get away with their abuses, harmful, tribalisitics and damaging ideas taking an advantage of lack of accountability from the service provider have not changed either. But I am coming back with a hope that identifying myself when making comments may make difference or can be modelled by some other people.

Still Sudantribune is being awaited by many people to see that it is execising its moral responsibility to provide a service that can shape our society positively than what it is doing now indirectly.

Back to the article, in my view the GoSS adaptation of the Yemenis’ government approach to Eriteria taking non-rightful territory by military force is in the right direction. In late 90s – 0s, the Eriterian leader sent his military forces to occupy the tiny Red Sea, but strategical Islands of Hanish. The Yemeni government refrained itself that time from military relataliation and only got away with a saying that I quote; “Hanish Islands are Yemenis, will remain Yemenis and would return to the Yenmenis people without bloodsheds, or with fewer costs as possible”. That response was received by the Yemenis people with anger and bitterness and regarded their government response as weak and cowadic.

But, few years if not months later, the Yemenis government surprised both its people, Eriterian leadership, people and their invading troops and also convinced the international community that it was right over the ownership of the disputed Islands by providing the convincing evidents to Internation Court of Arbitary (ICA) that resulted in the liberation of the Yemenis occupied territory with less expenses and heavy price paid by Eriterian people.

Having mentioned the issue of Hanish Islands, I am not saying that the Abyei issue could be resolved as simple as that. But the GoSS has many tools to use now before turning to the military one. All view-points locally, regionally and internationally including mine, meet at a point that Abyei solutions will include the use of military confrontation of both sides from the Southern and the Northern armies now, or in the future.

I strongly disagreed with the author on the point of Abyei’s sons and daughters poor, or non-present in the SPLA non-commision ranks. Using this excuse may politicised our army and could demoralised the few generals whose their fellow men and women are the minorities in the army who also might be in some commanding positions.

I believe that if the SPLA is 99% Latuka, then that is our national army in my view. In contrast, it is the role of Abyei’s interlectuals that is not enough if there at all, especially the role of Dr Francis Mading Deng is not vissible at anytime in the past or now. I wrongly thought that time that it is the political differences with Dr Garang that led Dr Francis to distant himself from his involvement in the movement.

Therefore, the writers should not count to know exactly how many people from each ethnic group there are in our national army.

Yes, I gree that we need Ustaz Amum to come out as his comment over Abyei issue is overdued. Yes also, it is not anyone that can say the curing words, but only an exceptional person can do that and Ustaz Amum is the very exceptiona and capable person to do that.

For his undisputed charismatic and patrioticism, Ustaz Amum is the only one to treat the Southern Sudanese people hits by current Abyei’s epidemic virus.

    Thanks,

    Akol Liai

    John M. Atem,

You are just a mere cowadic kind of a guy as the president Kiir is. If really you can’t go back to war because of Abyei as monotonously he repeated in his every speech, then what is that could make the people of South Sudan to trust him anymore that he Kiir can protects our people and the country if coming the threats from the enemy in the north.

President Kiir should know that he had demorallized the people of South sudan with his that phrase ” South Sudan will not go back to war again because of Abyei”. Of course South Sudan can go back to war because of Abyei, boarder demarcation, just to mention few, if he Kiir and blinded follower as you Atem don’t know.

Seriouly, our interim president had incited fear and his cowadicness into our army, which is a deadlist mistake in the world no any true president could do.

    TO ABRAHAM ISAAC,

Truly the silency of comerade Pagan had coursed dreadfull fear in South Sudanese people in abroad that the heaven might be near to falls onto us, since he Pagan was the one whom everyone relied on as our watchdog.

Poeple are losing true on the SPLM now because of the many things they are not doing rights, but even though, still poeple do have some hope hided somewhere at the SPLM that with the Pagan Amum presence in that party or government, still things will start to steered into right direction one day no matter what.

But with the North Sudan now in Abyei and no any condemnation from Mr. Pagan Amum had truly gave us the wrong signal that we are on the lose side of lose-win case.

Truly we all need to know where is this leader of us and his unfearfull voice.

    Love you Pagan.

Some of Abyei sons and daughters are busy praising NCP for its actions in Abyei and others are pushing GOSS/SPLA/SPLM to go to war with the north over Abyei. Any community divided to that extend is expected to achieve nothing – their destiny will always be decided by others.
Until Abyei intellectuals speak in one voice, solution to Abyei problem will always be complicated and at best in favour of North Sudan.
Dr. Francis M. Deng had throughout the liberation struggle undermined Dr. John Garang on his attempt to mobilize Abyei intellectuals and bring Abyei to South Sudan.
It is now time for Abyei sons especially Dr. Francis Mading Deng and other NCP staunch supporters from Abyei to demonstrate leadership on Abyei crisis. Other South Sudanese should not worry too much about Abyei if Abyei sons and daughters, internationally well read and influential like Dr. Francis M. Deng are not worried at all about the future of their people. If Dr. Francis M. Deng and his brothers want Abyei to be in North Sudan then so be it.
President Salva Kiir is right not to declare war on North Sudan because South Sudan is not prepared for full scale conventional war. You cannot go to war in which outcomes are not very bright in your favour. You can only do so when you are committing suicide or if you are a foolish general. Military decisions are not left predominantly to gambling but they are undertaken when actions, counteractions, contingency plans and a clear outcome are first evaluated and the outcome is favourable to your side.
A fierce battle was possible at the time SAF attacked Abyei and other areas but no war declaration after SPLA had withdrawn from Abyei. Conventional warfare between North Sudan and South Sudan will not make South Sudan achieve favourable outcome on the disputed items in the CPA.
An opportunity to teach SAF an unforgettable lesson was lost when SPLA allowed SAF to takeover Abyei without much resistant, now is time for negotiation not war.

    Nhomlawda,

You’re just driven by the emotions that the sons of Abyei should suppose to supported South Sudanese unamimously than to let themselves divided at this crucial time.

Well to begin with, I would like to tell you that Abyei isn’t for Dr. Francis Mading Deng’s in order for one to justify your arguement as right rather it’s for Abyeians.

But besides talking about the sons or daughters of the area, why didn’t you comment about the interest of South Sudan on Abyei than to see it in tribal lenses. I think the Abyei issue, whether Dr. Francis M. Deng or the sons of Abyei are divided over it, won’t yet allow us to forsake to the Arab or unless you trying to conceal the cowadness saga people worldwide are talking about the South Sudan Army (SPLM).

Also, you need to know the people of to be the Republic of South Sudan soon did not altogether fought with one voice. No. That didn’t happened because even the current vice president of South Sudan, Riek Machar, had defected from the SPLM/A joining the enemy Arab of the North fighting his own people. In brief, if I have to puts you on the track of our dirtiest history which you might not know, that Riek Machar had genocided thousands of South Sudanese compatriots in 1991 in Bor because they were Dinka and where Dr. Garang who was at the time the leader of the movement SPLM/A hailed from.

So, when the over 98% Nuer were decieved by Riek and his magician wornyang, did the South quit struggling for their rights, I bet not.

Please try to see the Abyei is broader way otherwise your arguement will pop off as shallow analysis.

Iam extremely sorry to take too much of my precious time to answer your silly question. President Kiir is not a coward. He is doing all he is doing to perserve the people’s of Southern Sudan lives. Man, you need to understand that there is nothing that we can gain from the war. If you are from Abyei then let your people fight this time. My question to you is: Why do you people hide in the South? Take up your arms then, and the people of Southern Sudan will be more than happy to help you people. There is no reason whatsoever to blame President Kiir for. Iam of course an orphaned son of liberation struggle and not that too happy to risk many lives. If that fitted me as a coward let it be.

Actually it’s the cowardness that makes you think you have taken too much time meanwhile you haven’t take even a less as to speak. But you better do so because as the people say that always the cowards grew up their kids.

Just be sure not to ignored the fact that the fear incited in you by your alike president Kiir that South Sudan cannot confront any nation whom wanted to invade our country cowardness. Do know I’m not based my argument on pleasing Mr. president Kiir inorder to rewarding me with something, of course, hell no.

And to treat your delimma of where am I from, fellow I’m not from Abyei otherwise I would have named myself Abyei but not Junub. I hopes you got what I meant. My interest of Abyei is just the South Sudan interest on the area, which has nothing to do with whether one is orphaned or not. You need to know you still going to die even if you choose as the only way to live forevery. Sorry, I’m extremely sorry back at you that there’s no such thing and live forevery if that was what in your and president Kiir’s mind. Please liberated yourself from the illusion because it’s better to die hero that coward.

    Isaiah Abraham.

I think you are right, this secretary general Mr. Pagan Amum and with his all figures of Southern Sudan’s leadership have been taking too much silence and not to mention their weakness signs being notice by all Southern Sudanese people. In any law or even in tradition societies, you have all rights to defending yourself from unlawful act like what the Northern Sudanese Army did in the last month, but it doesn’t mean that; you have break the law not at all and for Abyei District of Dinka Ngok Chiefdom. The Northern Sudan Army, they have violenst the CPA since agreement was been signed and the good examples, are like Malakal conflict in the beginning when Southern Sudanese militia were side with SAF within Malakal Town and againg, their joins Units made ambushed in Rank during the referendum election when 8 years Old girl was killed by those Northern Sudan Units that, were part of joins task forces as well as the SAF were bombing Northern Bahr al Ghazal State and Western Bahr al Ghazal State with proof from the U.N. And others organizations witness in there.

In fact, Pagan Amum is the guy many Southern Sudanese favor including myself however, but the invasion of Abyei and nearly about 100 people got killed in Abyei, mostly they are children and women who were not able to run quick out of the danger for SAF attacked. I knew that, from the beginning when we had lost our agreat leader in the SPLA/SPLM Dr. John Garang de Mabior and I understood fully that, the Southern Sudanese are going to faces more and more challenges aheade of its independence on July9.2011. I understand also that, good leaders don’t get their ways out to lead people but weakness people and people who have a little education always push themselves up on the Top to lead people while, they are really lacking with capabilities to lead people, I am not one of those very smarter people to judges them however, I have had been experience what type of leadership the people need most.

Abraham, Amum was right in his first statement saying, Khartoum government are trying to make destruction in the South so that, Southern Sudan will be the fail State unfortunately, his silence right now has sent a lot of messages to Southern Sudanese people particular, the capture of Abyei by North Sudanese Army proved the whole leaderships in Juba are not capable as the late chairman was in the SPLA/SPLM in term of thinking and reasoning. Yes, we all agrees to get Southern Sudan’s independence first, but the Idea of letting these nomads or Arba immigrants to come and claim Abyei land in Southern Sudan is just a matter of no child born in Southern Sudan to take guns and fight for.

From now on, I think our people, Southern Sudanese have learn that, they are going to looks to elected a thinkers leaders, people who like to speak to their citizens not that kind of leadership who avioding talking to people, we need people who can listen more careful insight when told but not this Salva Kiir Manyardit and Riek Machar Teny who have no any plan A. and plan B. Southern Sudan nation need people who are thoughtful and educated, people who have knowledge on how to solving problems and have commitment for unity of Southern Sudanese people.

There is no one like war anyway, but I do not agrre with the statement made in many times by president Salva Kiir Manyardit saying, he do not want to take Southern Sudanese back to war and the reason why I am not supporting his statement is because the war between North Sudan and Southern Sudan is unaviodable period. President Salva Kiir think that, everythings will be ended peaceful or cool like water however, he has to be given these words to define it. All Arabs when people talking about peace with none Arab, they says, they will accept salam but not sulh and the differences between these two words need Salva Kiir Manyardit and his Juba Administration to understand the difinition for these words.

Salam in Arab people, they mean temporarily cessation of hostilities and sulh is real mean reconciliation and this is why all these Addis Ababa peace agreement was been unsuccessful. Khartoum peace agreement of Dr. Lam Akol and Dr. Riek Machar was also failed. Minniw peace agreement for Darfur unsuccessful too and the ongoing Darfur peace agreement will fail in the end, because of the word salam is just mean temporarily fortunately, the 2005 peace agreement was successful because the majority of Southerners Sudanese people have learn from many mistaken they have made and they are also tried the Khartoum government policies.

In short, I would real appreciate your concern just like all Southern Sudanese does, but let us wait to see two things. One is that. International community world body and the U.N. Have the last chance to make action against indictment of war crime and crimes against humanity and the genocide added to Abyei invasion, if they did nothing for Sudan not to arrested Omar al Bashir then, we will probably see the dictatorships governments around the world will united as a result of U.N. And the International community’s weakness. The Southern Sudanese although they are ill equiped, the SPLA/SSAF will have to do what is necessary for their rights as they are entitle of Abyei land and every parts in Southern Sudan. There is no doubt, Southern Sudanese people are not fearful to let Arab of North Sudan stayed in Abyei.

War has been fought by all people of Bahr el Ghazal, Equatoria, and Uppernile but Garang Mabior called people of Aweil “domnhom” in Dinka when they were killed by Arab militia while their sons and daughters were liberating other areas of South Sudan. Some hundreds of them died in Abyei and its surrounding areas.
This time, Abyei will be Domnhom and nothing will happened because if a monkey eats your crops at Domnhom, nothing actually will affect your farm.

    Dear brothers & sisters,

Those who bit drums of war are innocent and ignorant to be able to justify their claims of bravery and strength.

First, it was through an agreement that we obtained our status of the Republic of South Sudan and not by victory through winning a war. Thus, we must be thankful to Almighty God to have given us this presious gift.

Secondly, we must also be thankful to those who took the brave decision to resort to peaceful end of the so called southern sudan problem which could have not been worn through arm struggle.I salute our fallen heroes as from the time of Torit rebelian upto the time of SPLA/SPLM. But let us face it brothers because it is not a good example to take a new born country to war and expect the world to help us.We cause the instability in the south. We will regret this action because if the NCP did not honestly want the south to go its way, they could have stood firm to block the process of agreement even if some people think that it was outside pressure that made them to accept the peace agreement.Lets waite and see if our tactics of war and blind imaginations will bring good to us.

Mr Pagan should not be used as a scapegoat. There are people who can speak out in the south besides him, for example, the spokeperson of the GoSS and the SPLA.You think that you are cleaver to use others but time is coming to check your tactics because your motives have become known at the end. You will have to face the reality in the south soon.

Let us be wise and think of our children and grantchildren.
Our power is limited at the moment and I am sure we can do better things for the future of the south without war.

    God bless

Having learnt that , why dare link our Pagan with Zionism ? What a fool !linking a wrong person to a right word ! v-v .

    Coming to Pagan’s silence , with or without pagan, South Sudan will still move forward just like the way we are moving foreward without the presence of late beloved Dr. John Garang !     Dear Isaiah;
I do not see the reason you need voice of Mr. Pagan Amum. I do not also see the reason you posted this article disputing Kiir Statement on Abyei issue. Leaders have their own tactiful way of doing things. Kiir need Declaration first to happen and all invitations had been dispatched to entire world or States leaders.

There is no room for Kiir to act like Bashir. Bashir himself during the April election campaigns especially in Yambio said very clearly that ” He would be the first person to recognised the results of the referendum if Southerners voted for sucession” Does Bashir kept his promise now?

All the same, Let Kiir said, the issue of Abyei will “take back South to War and it will not happen in his leadership”. That is statement is not judging Kiir cowardice. There are many reasons why Kiir does not want war at this time which you never now. I believe you are not a military man and you have not tested it.

Although you might have been commissioned and progress in the file of SPLA/M ranks you still lack military implementation strategies. Do not believe on Pagan just because his faces are rude when speaking against Arabs or NCP.

There are better leaders and better commanders who can really face jallaba without retreat. Please, Kiir had been silent over the media for a month and no one posted any article why Kiir was silent. It was just during that press conference when Kiir was seen speaking and it was when the King of Anyuak visited his office when he was seen speaking. I tell you, Kiir is the only Cock in the Country whose voice need to be heard daily and not Pagan. Such people like you are the one undermining Kiir Leadership.

    I know Pa’gan Amum personally.

He was in Addis only a few days earlier negotiating on behalf of his beloved South Sudan the very country he has fought and bled for. I was with him in Southern Sudan just last month when he fell ill and had to leave Juba for specialised treatment.

I have never met a man as committed to seeing his country rise from the ashes of war like Pagan. How many other men would give almost 30 years of their life to any cause much less one so hazardous?

The person who has written this article obviously doesn’t really know Pa’gan – who is a true hero of southern sudan.

Words are cheap but Pa’gan’s actions have already spoken for themselves!!! He is a hero, and a man of the Southern Sudanese people.

Whether Amum speaks or not, Abyei is already invaded.
In South Sudan, we always don’t seem to have the foresight to pre-empt situations but wait for crises then think of solutions.
For the past six years Pagan Amum was so vocal but Khartoum’s plans were not deterred. What difference will it make this time?

A wise strategy of defending ones territory is to fight the war outside it. But we allow the war to be fought in our territory and therefore we suffer the consequences. Focusing too much on independence lifted the pressure on Khartoum and gave it time and space to plan how to reverse our gains. Though they might not succeed, time and resources will be wasted on bringing Abyei back instead of building it.

But when Isaiah calls for war and begins listing even tribes that are hardly influential in GoSS and SPLA, it reminds me of those who always claim that they fought more than others thus keep some at the fringes of crucial national issues (except war).
Now war is looming, rare names like Toposa are top of the list.

    Funny indeed.

Let GoSS under Kiir’s leadership go back to the drawing board and look far into the future something like at least 60 years from now.

Khartoum will never allow us to even think of enjoying our independence and will always want to prove that we are inferior to them.
We can fight the war in a much more efficient way only if we plan it thoroughly and make the right choice of what type of war we really need to fight other than just adopting Khartoum’s style of waging wars.

Mr. Amum conspicuous silence worries Isaiah and Amum only.
    Dear Isaiah,
your point does really make sense on Amum as true liberator, but one thing I personally don’t understand with Amum are these.
How can he be liberator and at the sametime a destructor as it appeared last week that Amum was among the aborted coup de tat planers which resulted into that Amum and his runners left the country for exile?. If Amum is a liberator as you may agree, how can he steal in his own pocket (South Sudan)through a coup attempts? How can Amum be called a liberator since his plans are to betray his comrades as it appeared in 2007, 2008 and 2009 in the issues which lead to the relieving of Arthur Akuen from the Finance Minstry, Aleu from State Minstry of Interior AfFairs, Telar Deng from the Minstry of Presidential Affairs as a result of what Amum plans and arranged for his appearance politically?
Finally, I warn you not to support reckless people like Amum and his likes. If you and Amum want South Sudan to go for war before independence, then please you can wait for a while till our flag is raised by HE Lt Gen. Dr. Salva Kiir KuethPiny Mayardit Lual, then the time will be suitable for wars and recklessness though I know, neither you nor Amum will fight any war since non of you have never brought a solution than blames and criticisms. Amum have never solved any problem, if you don’t believe me, please ask others.

I think other people here who are make comments on this website are not Southerners if they are Southerners. Truly they are really foolish. Because there is no need of pointing your figure to the place where your leader is, like what this man or woman said that Pagan Amum is in Israel. This is not good a total and I think one day we does not heard from any Arabs citizens telling us in this website where their leaders are travelled. So I really hate this website with the comments of foolish people
