Ethiopia to deploy over 3,000 peacekeeping force in Abyei – Ambassador

By Tesfa-Alem Tekle

June 21, 2011(ADDIS ABABA) – Ethiopia said on Tuesday that it will send a peace keeping mission to the Sudan’s contested region of Abyei after North and South Sudan on Monday signed an agreement in Addis Ababa-agreement to fully demilitarise the central region and allow in an Ethiopian peacekeeping force.

The two Sudanese sides agreed in principle on the need for a third party to monitor the ill-defined border between North and South Sudan as the later approaches independence on 9 July.

According to the latest agreement signed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia which is seen by both North and South Sudan as honest broker will deploy a peacekeeping force of over 3,000 soldiers to ensure border security, including policing a demilitarised border zone that the sides have already agreed to.

“Ethiopia will deploy one brigade – around 3,200 – troops to Abyei after both North and South Sudan fully withdraw their forces from the region’’ Ambassador Dina Mufti, Ethiopia foreign affairs spokesperson told Sudan Tribune.

North Sudan’s military took the oil-producing area by force in May in response to an attack on its convoys that was being escorted by the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS). The South and the UN Security Council condemned the Sudan Armed Forces occupation of the contested region.

“On the agreement the African Union (AU) and the United Nations are asked to make sure the Abyei region gets demilitarised to allow Ethiopian forces move in” he added.

Both Khartoum and Juba have commended the Ethiopian government for the role it played in the peace process.

“Particularly the Ethiopian government has been instrumental in bringing in the two sides together and showing readiness to take honest responsibility of being there to secure Abyei and make sure the two sides are going to accept,” a representative from North Sudan told journalists right after the agreement was signed.

“The role of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi personally and the role of the Ethiopian government has been very crucial to this process,” he added.

Representatives from South Sudan similarly hailed the Ethiopian government for the relentless and diplomatic efforts it exerted to peacefully resolve the conflict.

The agreement comes less than three weeks before the South Sudan will become an independent state making it the world’s 193rd nation.

Over 100,000 people are estimated to have fled the region following the SAF’s attack and occupation of Abyei. Like the South, Abyei was supposed to hold a referendum to determine its future. The South referendum went ahead in January where 98 percent of voters opted to secede from the North.

Abyei’s referendum did not go ahead as South Sudan refused to let the Misseriya – who are alligned to North Sudan and use the area for grazing for part of the year – to take part.

The signed agreement was welcomed at the UN Security Council when the news was first announced by former South African president, Thabo Mbeki, who is lead the peace talks and negotiations around South Sudan’s separation, on behalf of the African Union.

This is very childish comment. Are we waiting for foreigners to solve our problems? A person like President Bush only brought trouble to the US and to the whole world. Obama is not weak, but wise. He knows that war cannot solve anything. He said it last week.

Can wars solve or aggravate the situation?

Abyei problem will always be there if the same old faces and strategies continues. Dinka Ngkok and Messeriyah chiefs are the ones to solve it – Not SPLM/A or NCP.

Good news but is very crucial for the two nations to settle the issue, Remember this Ethiopia troop let them be deploy in abyei but should be monitor properly because they will continues stealing our mineral in abyei?
This issue should not be like what happen in congo all the gold of congo have been stealing by this so call peace keeper, I know this because I been from Ethiopia and am living here in ethiopia for now am writing this article, Why is there are so many african country and is only Ethiopia who is willing come deploy their forces to abyei simple because there are targeting for something in the area special like the resources there North and South should think global than acting physical and very fasted to accepted the ethiopia troops, Also I code up with senior member of the Khartoum Goverment that the khartoum goverment have link with Ethiopia now these let the South Sudan open their eye twice the land belong to South of abyei

    Dear brother,

I am sure either you don’t know the integrity and honesty of the Ethiopian military or you have a hidden agenda using it for the consumption of your dirty politics. I can see clearly that your email is intended for the latter purposes. Please shut your mouth full of shits!

I personal can confirm that it is only Ethiopia who is selected by both the North and South who prefered their naibouring country – Ethiopia to bring a peacekeeping force to monitor their disputed border. They have the confidence that Ethiopia will be neutral. I haven’t heard such an instance before.

I am confident that the Ethiopian force as usual will continue to be neutral and show the ethical conduct and bring peace to the Sudan’s North-South conflict. God will also help them! Ethiopian peace keeping forces are respected and loved while conducting their mandate in Rwanda, Liberia, Darfur, etc. They will continue to be respected and loved.

Hell to Enemies of Ethiopia and its people!

Ethiopian forces who will be taking over Abyei are very brutal soldiers,so try to withdraw your forces before the have reached to the area.If you failed to do that, your forces will finished by the Ethiopian army and nobody will answerable to that brutal killing by the Ethiopian army.

The Sky is not the limit!

WE Africans have gone through terrible times. Extreme poverty and backwardness have become our identifying marks. The reasons for the prevalent dire political, social and economical conditions of our continent are many. A good deal of them is of external nature. We live in a world of slavery of immense humanity in a politically corrupt, manipulated market system of artificial scarcity, a tyrannical, destructive system to perpetuate poverty and exploitation in the interest of the ruling class, i.e the Western capitalism.

The West from its genocide of the native Americans, mercantile plundering and enslavement of African natives to its Militaristic rise of European Powers to World wars and Financial serfdom of the world has been a disastrous imposition of minority rule.

The main culprit has now a new face, that is Neo-colonialism which largely lives on perpetrating strife in the world. We Africans by fighting each other should not play into the hands of this system of greed.

The recent agreement reached by South and North Sudan to resolve their differences regarding the disputed Abiye region, peacefully is commendable. I salute all who tirelessly labored to bring the two parties to the negotiation table. Africa is now seeing leaders who are determined to resolve conflicts through dialogue. We have had our share of bigotry and civil strife; the time is now to work together towards eradicating poverty and backwardness.

If we cooperate, even the sky is not the limit. If we cooperate, we can raise our voices high and request for compensation for all evils done to us. If we cooperate, we can use our unity as a bargaining power and request for the continent’s bail out not in millions but in hundreds of billions. If we cooperate, love and respect one another, the sky is not the limit, we can stir the Almighty to lower the heavens and bless our efforts. If we just cooperate……………………

You editor, why do you delete my comment regarding this sensitive issue? You know what, you cannot eliminate this rational idea from the minds of Ethiopians, It might be unpalatable for you sudanes but it is inevitable.

Whether you like it or not any one looking for the territorial fertile lands of Ethiopia be it sudan or somalie and the current regime of Ethiopia who are working day in and day out to dismantle the sovergnity of Ethiopia would recieve the proper punishment from the great and brave nation of Ethiopia. We know how to make wars and demise the enemiy of Ethiopia soon after the Tigray dominated government vanished.

I have never seen such stupidity in area of journalism.

Before being engaged in the profession of journalism go and take rigorous training in the fiels. Ignorant people could never be journalist at all.
