Juba: Security operation recovers over 700 weapons

June 27, 2011 (JUBA) – An impromptu operation conducted by South Sudan’s Security Committee; a body recently established to oversee the pre-independence security preparations, saw over 780 assorted weapons recovered on Saturday said South Sudan’s Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The operation, which began in the early hours of Saturday morning, continued until mid-day, mainly involved the thorough inspection of vehicles and their occupants house-by-house sweeps.

IGP Achuil Tito Madut told later told journalists at a press conference that weapons confiscated during the operation included AK-47 assault rifles, machine guns, hand pistols, ammunition and bows and arrows.

Movement was restricted within Juba, the South Sudan capital, while several passengers destined for early morning flights at Juba airport missed their Saturday flights.

The hastily conducted operation, according to the IGP, covered less than half of Juba town and its surrounding areas. He said a similar exercise may be carried out without necessarily alerting the public.

Also recovered during the operation, Madut added, were over four kilograms of opium.

With the independence of South Sudan nearing, thoughts of many go to the establishment of a secure environment. Security concerns are critical to the success of the region because as well as impacting upon the day to day life of its citizens, security is critical in making in South Sudan a viable investment opportunity – without which development will be been painfully slow.

Good job and keep on, this should be done in all cities of Southern Sudan. Small and big city, the SPLA Polices and their leaders must keep going.

Not only Juba inside but out side communities that, are too close to Juba have to be done like this.

    Aleu,
Well said brother. In order to secure our long waited independence day, we or our governmental security agents must work hard day and night to search, and insure more security for our citizens and the welcomed foreign dignitaries.

It is very imperative to thanks our homeland security who has done such a wonderful job to search and seized those anti-aircraft, which were hidden in the dark or behind the seen.I recommend that, those anti-aircraft owners must be brought to justice otherwise, they must assure who those big machine guns belong to,and why they kept them secretively without being known by our government who provided us with guns than any other source. There must be something hidden behind it.What a fishy concealment?

Security is our first priority within these remaining eleven days than an environmental clearings.Evil doers never learned the way to peace but rather looking for dooms.
Please let’s be secure and free from anxiety and all sorts of………Okay!

That is good news but South Sudan police must be very careful on terrorism because our obvious foe is still wondering as to how did it happen for the block of a country to break away. They are trying hard to bring down the will of Southerns nationalist who came out in their numbers and show to the world their status ie first class citizen earlier January therefore, these people need protection to celebrate their happiness peacefully. Our visitors are important to us we should take certain measures to warmly welcome them.

This should be the fourth time that Juba residents are targeted for weapons, yet day in day out we continue to hear of killings and armed robberies in Juba by people dressed as policemen with scared faces. These weapons will trickle back to the jenge who will continue to rob poor citizens in Juba. Most of their residences were not searched and that is where they have stockpiles. Due to their evil deeds, they feel so insecure that they are armed to the teeth at all times. How can we have evelasting peace with such creatures in our midst?

Well done security forces but make sure you search Jebel Kurjur top and surrounding areas and all other hills around Juba before Independence Day is celebrated. Ensure that security units are deployed on top of all those hills around Juba so that enemies cannot station and launch rockets into the city from those hills.

Al Bashir’s attendance of South Sudan Independence Day is important because it is Sudan that is being divided and it is important for a North Sudan leader to attend.
I don’t understand why South Sudan government had to invite the whole world to celebration of South Sudan independence.
Juba is a messy city with all kind of groups (Somali, Arabs, Eritreans, Ethiopians, Ugandans, Kenyans, etc) with no proper identification of residence and business in South Sudan plus South Sudan traitors living in the city. No one knows these groups affiliations and intentions on people of South Sudan safety and reputation.
It will be a security nightmare for our ill trained security and anti-terrorism units to ensure smooth operation in the city during the Independence Day if heavyweight politicians such as Barrack Obama, David Cameron, Nicholas Sarkozy, and Angela Markel are to attend.
Just get regional leaders and foreign affairs ministers from western countries to attend South Sudan Independence Day. Attendance by the whole world does not make South Sudan more or less independence state or guarantee South Sudan more direct foreign investments or grants.
Instead it will bring security arrangement nightmare for South Sudan young security institutions. South Sudan government should not take chances in the face of many enemies of South Sudan people by giving security forces tasks that are beyond their expertise at the moment.
