Sudanese army deny participation of Darfur rebel groups in S. Kordofan attack

July 19, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) denied the participation of a Darfur rebel group in an attack on a military garrison in South Kordofan stressing the area is under full control of its troops.

The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) said yesterday it carried out a series of joint attacks with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA)- North on the Sudanese army positions in South Kordofan from 10 to 17 July.

Khaled Alswarmi, SAF spokesperson told the pro-government website (SMC) that the army repelled an attack by the SPLA-North on Altaiss area yesterday. He also dismissed JEM statements saying “no evidences” can prove such claims.

“The presence of the Justice and Equality Movement in South Kordofan is only in the media but not on the ground,” he said.

The military spokesperson further said that the Sudanese forces repulsed the attack on the small area of Altaiss and inflicted heavy losses on the SPLA- north.
