Power blackout hits Sudan for several hours

August 23, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – A major blackout on Tuesday evening left most of Sudan, including the capital Khartoum, without power for hours fueling speculations and rumors throughout the day.

Electricity slowly started returning approximately seven hours later which came during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and amid soaring temperatures that reached a high of 42 °C (107 °F).

The director of Sudan’s electricity board Ga’far Ali al-Bashir said the outage was due to the introduction of new infrastructure aimed at improving the efficiency of electrical supply of Al-Shamaliya (Northern) state.

This however led to interruptions in other states as well, he said. It is not clear why this was not communicated to customers in advance.

Bashir told reporters that they are attempting to install an adapter with an additional capacity of 150 Mega volt to improve the efficiency of supply in Al-Shamaliya state.

He said engineers have made a major effort for the return of electricity after the completion of a gradual introduction of generating units feeding the national network.

Rumors in Khartoum said that Sudan people Liberation Movement North (SPLM-N) led by by Blue Nile governor Malik Agar took over Ruseiris power station which is one of the major source of electricity for the entire Sudan.

The Sudanese army and SPLA, military wing of SPLM-N, are fighting since last June in South Kordofan. Today Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir announced a unilateral ceasefire after rejecting it in the past and insisting on a military solution.

Thanks for your comments. People with noble cause are people who fight to achieve or project peace, love and equality. Regardless of our political affiliation, cultural differences, social structures and classes, colour and gender, we are the same human race. Of course, we are bound to commit mistakes. But are we ready to acknowledge them and correct them??????

The people of the Republic of South Sudan have fought noble cause to free themselves and project peace, love and equality. I personally don’t condon hatred and bad wishes for the North. But, I don’t condon attrocities being commited against the people of the North by the goverment of the day in Khartoum too!!

Omar Hassan Al-Bashir tried his best to build the country for almost 20 years. It is a high time for him to let it go and give other nationalist leaders to pick it up for the sake of stability and good governance. He has ran out of fresh ideas. It has been too long and too boring for him to govern the country!!

On the other hand, I acknowledge the existance of tribal conflicts in the South by cattle raiders. I am confident that the Government of the Republic of South Sudan is working hard to ensure security and peaceful mediation among communities in order to co-exist as a one nation bound by the precious lives sacrificed during the struggle to have the present independent country.

Until you and the Northern Civil Society acknowledges and apologize for the decades long heinous crimes committed against the African and non-Muslim Sudanese. Its funny how you’re offended by words such as Jalaba and Mondkuru, but compare that to words such as (Abd) slave, monkey etc etc.. Try to find out how the word Jalaba came about then you’ll feel really silly.

You are always attempting to defend the indefensible, don’t you get it? Your elites have destroyed our Land in the name of imposing one culture and one religion on over 100 cultures and many religious beliefs, why is that difficult for you to comprehend?

Being a proud Muslim should not lead you to oppress others or condem them to a lesser life (those who silently watch while others are being oppressed are as guilty as the oppressors), the profit Mohammed (PBUH) until his dying days did business with the Jews for God sake, who are you bigoted northerners think you are? to be above a profit!!.

Once you achieve that mental state as many northerners did, you will then become the brother which Deng is hoping for.

    Thank you Mohmaded Ali

You have forgotten one thing my friend, you have been enjoying our resources for decades, now there are gone with us. Do you thing hunger will not enter khartoum? I hate you Jalaba, with your dark hearts which lack humanity. Bashir must go to ICC and answer some questions on Darfur and mass graves reported in S.kordofan.

WOOOOOOOOW Mohmed Ali go to hell!
