Libya demands AU’s headquarters to be moved from Ethiopia
ADDIS ABABA, June 03, 2004 (Sudan tribune) — The Libyan government has asked the African Union’s Commission headquarters to be moved from Addis Ababa to any other country, sources close to the issue have noted.
The issue of moving the AU headquarters from Addis Ababa would be on the agenda of the July third regular session and is expected get the required decision, the Ethiopian Addis Zena reported.
This is not the first time such issue to arise regarding the AU, similar demands were made in the past. But such request indicates the deterioration of relationships between, the two countries.
Such move could be considered as a sign of deterioration of the bilateral relations between the two countries.
During the AU summit in Tripoli last February, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi had tried to reconcile Eritrea and Ethiopia but Ethiopia’s PM Meles Zenawi declined this initiative.
