South Sudan rebels claim capture of Mayom town

October 29, 2011 (JUBA) — The rebel South Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SSLM/A) announced on Saturday morning the capture of Mayom town after fierce clashes with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in Unity state.

The seizure of the town came twenty-four hours after the release of a statement by the rebel group urging United Nations and aid groups to evacuate the Unity state. The SSLM accused the governor Taban Deng of human rights abuses against civilians in two counties of the Unity state: Mayom and Nhial Diew.

“Our troops now control Mayom town after a four-hour battle,” Maj. Gen. Bapiny Monytuil, Deputy Head of SSLM/A Military High Command, told Sudan Tribune. He further asserted that their troops will move to other states once the Unity state is fully controlled.

“We will move to Warrap and other regions because we intend to liberate the whole South Sudan,” Bapiny said.

The rebel group said yesterday that Governor Taban ordered to divorce the wives of SSLA commanders and to confiscate the cattle they paid in dowries from their in-laws in three counties in Unity state: Nhial Diew, Mankien and Mayom.

Asked if their attack was motivated by this decision, the rebel official said this attack is directed against South Sudan’s ruling party, and its government in Juba. He stressed they are coordinating with rebel groups in other regions like George Athur whose group operates in Jonglei.

The US State Department last September offered to mediate between the Juba government and the different South Sudanese rebel groups in a bid to find a negotiated settlement to the conflict. The rebels, including Geoge Athur accepted the American initiative, but Juba showed some reluctance.

Asked about the American mediation, Bapiny claimed that Juba said it prefers direct talks with the rebel groups but they declined the offer. He further said the SPLM believes it can militarily crush any rebellions in South Sudan.

A few weeks after the start of the George Athur rebellion in Jonglei state; the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) sought to convince Juba to accept a mediation between the two parties but Juba refused the offer.

The SSLA deputy head of military command emphasized they are peace lovers but they want an agreement addressing the root-causes of the conflict.

“We are not against peace but we refuse a deal like what Salva sealed with Peter Gatdet,” Bapiny said, alluding to the money that the former rebel leader had allegedly received before signing a peace agreement with Juba in August 2011.

Is it a fiction or true story? If at all it is a genuine story then Juba ought to do something. We had known wars because we all had passed through wars, thus whatever reason or reasons that might flame war must be attacked at the bud before it grows to maturity.

It is an indisputable experience that whenever something starts, people tend to ignore it and later when it reaches the highest point.

Congratulation for making your own relatives to suffer for the sake of power angry individuals, who are misleading innocent men in uniform to kill their own people, infact i had mixed reactions to the arcticle,if the rebel were not Nuer lead by Nuer, it would have been understood by the rest who are also facing challenges put upon them by Juba,s goverment, they would have gained a lot of support.

Dear brothers and sisters in Unity State,
We the South Sudanese who have a sense of responsibility, patriotism and peace loving citizens should not be dragged into this meaningless and selfish war which is caused by North and supported by the North to the people of Mayom and other counties around in Unity State. The rebel should understand whom are they fighting first in the areas of their

When the people of the Republic Of South Sudan went to the bush to fight the Arabs, they knew what they were fighting for
but what about those rebels? Are they not puppets of the North? Think it is not easy to go to Warap or Lake States even the whole Unity State will not be easy for you capture just wait in place of ancestors Mayom because that is where you will enjoy support only not all SS.

Yes indeed are puppet of the NIF regime in Khartoum, they were thinking they will enjoy the fruits of our oil in Khartoum again like others did before, but apparently it seem even Khartoum has nothing to fund his war machine in New South Sudan((b.Nile,Nuba), so they are running back hoping to capture oil field so they can be pay by Khartoum. this is a rubbish, we South Sudan must end this.

I really do n’t understand why other people still need war, while we (South Sudanese) are already in peace and independent. Why can’t we use peaceful means to solve problems? If Juba is not doing things correctly, there are many avenues to address. Guns will only worsen the situation. Why can’t we sympathize with the situation of our communities? We need roads, social services not war.

It is ridicules not to support SSLA/M simply because its being led by Nuer given to the fact that all the people of RoSS used to fight for the SPLA which was being led by Dinka men in the same way they used to fight and die for Anyanya one whose leader was General Joseph Lago from Equatoria. So, why people of RoSS can’t fight for the movement whose leaders are from Nuer tribe?

As the name suggests, SSLA is a true army of all the people of RoSS, its leader could be any one from RoSS as I believe there is no point for Nuer alone to fight for the liberation of the whole country! Just like SPLA used to be supported by all southern Sudanese including myserlf and others who are now fighting against them in SSLA, People of RoSS are doing the same for their fighters in the SSLA

SSLA enjoys the support and the blessing of the whole southern Sudanese. Without that support and blessing the movement can’t achieve the victory we are enjoying now. I can understand your point but I want you to take a good look at how things are being run now by in RoSS by SPLA/M. Look at the way SPLM is looting our resources with total impunity as if it is the only power in the RoSS. Who gives SPLA/M the right of monopoly of RoSS? To make a different, people must kick SPLA/M out of RoSS by force because that is the only language the Militia knows.

SSLA Suporter, you know my brother, the last war had cost us alot of our lives as South Sudanese. I personally do not think we need to loose more lives. You see my brother the peace we are enjoying as South Sudanese is more than the resources being wasted by the government in Juba as you said. What we need to do is to prepare for the next elections and possibily vote them out than to wage war.

In fact, the war in Southern Sudan will never end. Bapiny Monytuil is completely right. Taban Deng Gai has been in leadership in Unity State, but nothing has changed completely. All Unity State citizen people needs change. Taban Deng Gai did not relealize that he is doing something wrong until the time when the Unity State citizens pick up the swords and guns against him.

Brother Longa! We aren’t literally at peace as long as our kids are still dying with hunger and from preventable or treatable diseases because they have been denied medical care by the corrupt regime of SPLM militia that is embezzling our public funds and practising nepotism by employing only relatives and the bigoted supporters of the regime. How can we call that a peace! Let the liberation cont.

No matter what, I literally believe in the determination of our great people of RoSS to overcome the tyranny of SPLA militia and we will one day sterilize RoSS from SPLA/M’s contaminations.

Come on Agustino Deng, I have come to your many messages before but I can not think you can give sympathy to militias of been right, attacking Mayom has nothing to do with corruption in Unity State or RSS, but rather by agenda of NIF regime in Khartoum of destabilizing South hopping that can give them ground in south Sudan resources, and I don’t think any S Sudanese can tolerate this devilish act

I suppose what the SPLM are doing by paying some generals to stop rebelling pays off ! Stop being so blind – go read something other than Sudantribune.
