S. Sudan youth convention to tackle unemployment, insecurity

November 17, 2011 (JUBA) — The youth fraternity from the Greater Bahr el Ghazal region are set to participate in a four day strategy and planning conference that will address rampant unemployment and insecurity, among other issues in South Sudan.

The convention, scheduled for November 24-27 in Aweil, the Northern Bahr el Ghazal state capital, will bring together different youth mainly drawn from four states of Warrap, Lakes, Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Western Bahr el Ghazal.

Also targeted are civil society activists, policy makers, various political parties, government officials and the media.

“This conference is largely considered to be an initiative for
promoting peace, unity and development in this new nation with specific focus focus on how the youths of the Greater Bahr el Ghazal can work towards a brighter and sustainable future in the Republic of South Sudan,” Arthur Angok Chol, the initiative chairperson told journalists in Juba, the country’s capital.

The youth in South Sudan, according to the 2008 housing and population
census, represent 70% of the entire South Sudanese population. To-date, however, the youth are still faced with several challenges.

“We are optimistic that this youth strategy and planning workshop provides a unique platform for dynamic exchange of views, providing opportunities for in-depth discussion within a series of interactive discussion sessions,” Chol said.

An estimated 150 people, including 25 representatives from each of the states in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal region are expected to grace next week’s convention, which will address insecurity, health, education, agriculture, entrepreneurship and vocational training aspects.
