By Bonifacio Taban Kuich

November 28, 2011 (BENTIU) – More than two hundred students who finished their 2010 secondary and primary education certificates were congratulated by the Mayom community on Saturday at an event in Bentiu, the capital of Unity state.

The celebration for the students from the troubled county was attended by Member of Parliaments, ministers and advisors and local chiefs.

Mayom county has been affected the worst by continuing clashes between the national army (SPLA) and the South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA) rebel movement in Unity state. The SSLA says it is fighting the South Sudanese state because of corruption and tribalism.

Peter Dak Khan, the Unity state MP for Mayom said he appreciated the efforts of the students from the area in passing their exams. He said that the students leaving secondary school would now be able to apply to go to university.

James Wuor Nhial, a student from Mayom county, urged the government to make it possible for students to study in Mayom and bring peace to the area.

“We are having a very big problem in Mayom, children, mother[s] and elder[ly people] are now dying” he said. The deaths of people in Mayom were a “surprise” and were causing a lot of “suffering” Nhial said.

Students, he said, had found it hard to focus on studying when many were discovering that relatives had been killed in the fighting. It was also effecting relations between Mayom students and students from other counties in Unity state, Nhial said.

He added that state and national government needed to find ways to end the rebellions in Unity state through a peaceful process and protect civilians.

Local chiefs from Mayom county who attended the occasion urged the students to take education seriously, as it would help solve the problems of Unity state and Mayom in the long term.

The chiefs called upon the government officials in Unity state to engage in peaceful dialogue and negotiations with those who had grievances.

Many students in Mayom this year had not received the best learning compared to others years due to unrest conflicts in the area.

Mr, Wour Nhial, the problem is among in your society why it is very easly for Neur in Unity to create rebel.? I think most part of blame goes to Nuers parents because they don’t teach their kids to be the peace maker. Now South Sudan has become a nation but you guys make no mistake,if you guys continus with such behavior then, your State will not get development and you will also face a punishmen

Nuer are in three states our country inhabiting more than 36 counties in all. And the only truoble county is Mayom county as reporter clearly explain to us here . Now if that is an issue what of the last four months inhumane killing

This is a good move. I appreciate those student from primary and secondary school who dedicated themselves to merely accomplish their dreams. I hope God will be with them forever and ever.
However, I doubt that those students might learn the system of rebell since Mayom County is the center for all Nuer who rebel from the SPLM/SPLA since 1983 until this current time.
