February 24, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) signed yesterday a loan agreement with Sudan in the amount of $30 million that will be used to build a dam on Atabarah river.

OFID.jpgOFID Director-General Suleiman Al-Herbish said during the signing ceremony at the fund’s headquarters in Vienna that they have always taken a keen interest in developmental projects in Sudan.

He noted that since OFID’s foundation in 1976, $256 million was extended in credit to Sudan.

The Sudanese ambassador to Vienna Mahmood Hassan Al-Amin expressed deep gratitude for the continuous cooperation with OFID saying that this loan is genuine example of that collaboration which covered areas such as agriculture, irrigation, power generation, health, education and roads.

He said that the proposed dam will contribute to raising the standard of living of the population in the region by increasing the agricultural area, providing irrigation and fisheries projects in addition to generating electricity.
