Sudanese official slams supporters of rebel alliance

February 25, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese presidential assistant Nafie Ali Nafie blasted those who are sympathetic with the Sudan Revolutionary Forces (SRF) rebel alliance saying they don’t represent any weight within the Sudanese society.

Nafie made the remarks while addressing the inauguration ceremony of a new land port in the Nile River state.

“We dissociate ourselves from those who sold their religion and their homelands cheaply and became agents of agents,” the Sudanese official said.

“Those who are seeking victory from Juba alliance and the alliance of Darfur and Abdel-Aziz al-Hilu and Malik Agar; Those who made this alliance their masters and leaders do not represent the people of Sudan in many or few” he added.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) is fighting SRF rebel groups on several fronts namely Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile.

Last year clashes erupted in South Kordofan and Blue Nile leading to the displacement of thousands of civilians.

Al-Hilu was deputy governor of South Kordofan but after gubernatorial elections, which he lost to incumbent governor Ahmed Haroun, he cried foul and said he would not recognise the results. Shortly afterwards he became leader of Sudan People Liberation Movement North (SPLM-N) fighters in the state which borders the newly created state of South Sudan.

Last September, Agar who was governor of Blue Nile was removed from his position by Bashir following fighting between his forces and SAF.

In both cases it is not clear what triggered the violence or who started it with SPLM-N and Khartoum trading blame.

Sudan is accusing Juba of providing support to SPLM-N and even lodged several complaints with the United Nations Security Council in this regard.

Last year the leaders of Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), and the two factions of Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) of Abdel Wahid Al-Nur and Minni Minnawi have forged an alliance with SPLM-N.

Sudan says South Sudan coordinated the formation of the alliance for the sake of toppling its government.
