Lakes state: One killed, five wounded in fresh cattle raid
April 8, 2013 (JUBA) – At least a person was killed and five others wounded in fresh cattle raid that took place in Cueibet county of South Sudan’s Lakes state, authorities said.
“The raiders from Tonj East county of Warrap state attacked a cattle camp in Lakes state called Atuel-Nhom, also known as Gua on Friday at 1:00pm. The raiders killed one person and the left five people on [the] ground with gunshot wounds,” Mayom Malek, the Cuibet country commissioner said on Monday.
The raiders, he added, also walked away with about 290 herds of cattle.
The attack, Lakes state authorities say, is a violation of the peace and reconciliation conference held from 29-31 March, between the four counties of Cueibet, Rumbek North, Tonj East and Tonj South.
The three-day conference, officials told Sudan Tribune, came up with 20 resolution, among which recommended that neighboring states return all cattle looted and compensate those killed during raids.
Malek accused his Tonj East county counterpart, Gum Mading Akucbang of allegedly being behind the attack, contrary to the peace and reconciliation agreement.
Almost two years since its independence, South Sudan has witnessed a cycle of violence in the form of cattle raids, inter-clan clashes and tribal conflicts. Violence, the United Nations estimates, is likely to displace up to 200,000 South Sudanese in 2013.
