Lakes: unknown gunman kills hunter in Wulu

June 15, 2013 (RUMBEK) – An unknown gunman have killed a hunter in a remote village in Makundi payam [district] in Lakes state’s Wulul county on Friday.

Authorities in Wulu acknowledged the incident, saying the culprit remained at large.

Senior security personnel in Wulu confirmed that the incident occurred in a remote area of Makundi payam distant from Wulu centre, adding that police forces on the ground are pursuing the suspect, but that his whereabouts remain unknown.

“Hunter Doma Roti [has been] found death – his was being killed by arms men but we did not manage to capture the suspect – our forces are still in the bush looking whereabouts the suspect hiding out” said security who requested anonymity.

The Wulu community is among the most peaceful in Lakes state’s eight counties of Lakes state and relies largely on farming and hunting for their livelihoods.

This is the first time a hunter has been killed in Lakes state, although road ambushes have rampantly increased since the start of June.

On Tuesday, a business truck was hijacked between Madol and Mayen in Rumbek North county by an unknown gunman. The Somalian driver was killed in the attack after being stopped at gunpoint.

The state government has declined to comment on the status of the investigation or the whereabouts of the suspects.
