European Union provides €3 million boost to WFP operations in Sudan
KHARTOUM – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed a generous contribution from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) towards WFP operations in Sudan.
The €3 million (US$4.1 million) contribution will cover the needs of 345,000 internally displaced people in Darfur and other areas.
“We are very grateful for ECHO’s continued support that helps WFP provide timely and much needed food assistance to displaced and conflict affected people as well as other vulnerable groups across the country,” said WFP Representative and Country Director in Sudan Adnan Khan.
WFP will also use part of the grant to purchase 395 metric tons of specialised supplementary food for treating and preventing malnutrition among 66,000 children, pregnant women and nursing mothers for one month.
This contribution brings ECHO’s total contributions to WFP Sudan this year to €20 million (US$27.1 million) making ECHO its second largest donor.
Sudan remains one of WFP’s largest and most complex operations, providing food assistance to people suffering conflict, displacement and chronic under-nourishment in Darfur, as well as in the east and border areas to the south.
In 2013, WFP plans to reach 3.9 million people across Sudan, 2.9 million of whom are in Darfur. In addition, WFP is concerned with supporting those who have been newly displaced following recent conflict in Darfur and South Kordofan, North Kordofan and Blue Nile states.
WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. Last year, WFP reached more than 97 million people in 80 countries with food assistance.
