Sudanese police seize shipment of illegal drugs en route to Khartoum

December 31, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s General Directorate of Narcotics Control (GDNC) has busted a truck loaded with 21,203 cones of marijuana on its way to the capital Khartoum.

The director of GDNC, Maj. Gen. Al-Mekki Mohamed Al-Mekki, pointed that they developed adequate plans to control drug smuggling, adding that seized shipment was discovered despite the novel method of hiding it.

The police deputy director-general and inspector general, Lieu. Gen. Adel Al-Agib Yacoub, attributed in press statements on Tuesday the success of the operation to the adequate plans, pointing that Ministry of Interior seeks to protect the youth against the devastating impact of drugs.

Last June, the Sudanese president Omer Al-Bashir announced the establishment of a Higher Council for Combating Narcotics, headed by the Vice-President and with its membership drawn from all relevant parties.

He stressed the state’s keenness to combat narcotics by adopting an active strategy to make Sudan free of illegal drugs.
