SPLA-N rebels capture three areas in South Kordofan: spokesperson
December 12, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – The rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) on Friday announced the capture of three areas in South Kordofan, confirming reports of tense fighting since the suspension of the peace talks.
“In a battle that lasted from 3.00pm to 5.00pm (local time), SPLA forces were able to liberate al-Daldako and Ruseiris areas respectively at 17 and 12 km north-east of Kadugli (the capital of South Kordofan),” said SPLM-N spokesperson Arnu Ngutulu Lodi.
In an audio statement sent to Sudan Tribune, Lodi further said the SPLA-N fighters inflicted heavy losses on the government troops and destroyed a T-55 tank. He added they seized another tank in good condition, a ZU 23 mm cannon and three military vehicles.
The rebel spokesperson added they also captured a third locality called Jabal Nimir, at 7km west of Kadugli and seized two canons and a short-wave radio.
He said that the SPLA-N forces continue to defend themselves defend the citizens in South Kordofan and Blue Nile of the “Decisive Summer” attacks carried out by the National Congress forces.
The Sudanese defence minister on Thursday vowed to crush the SPLM-N rebels and announced the resumption of the Decisive Summer operations against rebel groups in the Two Areas and Darfur.
The government and SPLM-N delegations are to meet next January to resume talks on a cessation of hostilities agreement.
