Sudan’s detained opposition leader transferred to hospital amid health fears
December 23, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – The jailed Sudanese opposition leader, Farouk Abu Issa, has been rushed to hospital on Tuesday following deterioration of his health condition, his family said.
Abu Issa, 81 years old, is the chairman of the opposition alliance of the National Consensus Forces (NCF).
His daughter, Nahla Abu Issa, told Sudan Tribune that authorities transferred her father to hospital, expressing deep concern on his health.
She revealed that they were not allowed to see the results of his medical tests, saying her father seemed extremely fatigued and lost much of his weight following more than two weeks of detention.
“He was surrounded by a group of doctors and we were not allowed to stay with him at the hospital to follow up on his condition,” she added.
Nahla also added that her father suffered from cardiac arrhythmia in addition to other health problems which requires him being brought under special medical care.
Earlier this month, the National Intelligence and Security Services arrested Abu Issa and head of the Alliance of the Sudanese Civil Society Organizations, Amin Mekki Madani, besides former ruling National Congress Party (NCP) member, Farah Agar, and his office manager, Mohamed Eldoud after their return from Addis Ababa where they signed the “Sudan Call” with rebel groups.
Reports from Khartoum on Monday said the security services transferred Abu Issa and Madani to Kober Prison.
They are now accused of subversive activities and use of violence to overthrow the government, charges which carry the death penalty.
