UK appoints new ambassador to Sudan

April 12, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – A new British ambassador to Sudan has been announced by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London.

Michael Aron, the current ambassador to Libya, is to take the post later this year in succession to Peter Tibber.

FCO said in a press statement on Sunday that the outgoing ambassador, Tibber will be transferring to another diplomatic service appointment.

After studying Arabic at Leeds University and before joining the FCO in 1984 Aron worked as an English teacher in Ed Damer secondary school in northern Sudan for two years from 1981 to 1983.

“Since then his FCO career has been focussed on the Middle East and North Africa, including as Ambassador to Kuwait, Iraq and most recently Libya,” the statement reads.

Aron also served as EU director and head of Scottish government EU Office in Brussels between 2006 and 2008.

According to the statement, Aron will be leaving Tunis, where the UK embassy to Libya is currently based in June.

“I am delighted to be returning to Sudan after 30 years. I have very fond memories of the charm, hospitality and generosity of the Sudanese people I met and worked with and I look forward to renewing friendships, developing new relationships and working with all parties to help Sudan overcome the challenges it faces,” said Aron following his appointment.
