MPs propose to ban activities of rebel supporters in Sudanese universities
May 18, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) legislators plan to submit a new bill to the Sudanese parliament banning the political activities of the supporters of armed groups inside the universities.
The ruling party has accused the rebel groups recently of exporting their activities to the university’s campuses in the country, pointing to the increase of violent protests at colleges and universities.
The head of political committee of NCP deputies in the Sudanese parliament Hassab- Allah Saleh Wednesday revealed that his party will submit a bill banning political activities of the supporters of armed groups at the universities.
“After the failure of their military action in the battle field, (Darfur) armed groups and the SPLM-N have resorted to tamper within universities,” Saleh said.
“As it has been proven that arms are introduced into the universities campuses, does it make sense to a rational State to allow supporters of to armed movements to exercise political activities,” he added.
The NCP lawmaker went further to say this bill will dissuade what he described as “criminal activities”, stressing they are working to make the proposal a reality to stop it.
He said the initiative emanated from a number of deputies who are keen to maintain security, and it will be handed over sson to the executive boy, the national legislature and the relevant authorities.
Two students were killed last April in student clashes inside the Sudanese universities in Khartoum and North Kordofan.
University students supporting the opposition groups and the ruling party trade accusations of using arms against each other .
In June 2013, the Sudanese minister of higher education issued a decree banning the Sudanese Revolutionary Forces rebel groups and its loyal student groups from practising political activities inside universities, following joint rebel attacks in North and South Kordofan states.
