Four injured in Jonglei’s Twic East attack

June 8, 2016 (BOR) – At least four people, including an elderly lady, were injured in an attack that occurred in Twic East county of Jonglei state on Tuesday, an official said.

The county commissioner, Dau Akoi Jurkuch, said it was a coordinated attack involving over 30 armed men suspected to be from Murle tribe.

“Although Twic had experienced frequent raiding and child abduction, but an attack of this kind had never occurred in Twic East county. The previous attacks occurred because the attackers aimed at cattle or children, but this one was planned just to kill people, no child abducted or any single head of cattle stolen,” said Akoi.

“It was also a well-coordinated attack that supervised the people”, he added, accusing the youth of Gumuruk county of allegedly carrying out the coordinated attack in Twic East.

“The police and army together with the youth followed the attackers and returned after more than 24 hours. They had gone to the direction of Gumuruk”, Akoi told Sudan Tribune.

The commissioner of Gumuruk, Joseph Oleyo could not be reached for a comment.

Since January 2016, Twic East county has suffered loses, including 10 cases of children abducted. 23 people have reportedly been killed and over 20 injured in the same period.
