Sudan affirms commitment to protect consumers’ rights

KHARTOUM, Sudan, Dec 11, 2004 (PANA) — Industry Minister Galal Yousif Degair has affirmed the commitment of the Sudanese government to the protection of the rights of consumers in keeping with international agreements and principles.

Speaking Friday at a meeting of the Arab Consumers Protection
Association, Degair enjoined Arab leaders to take up their
responsibility in protecting consumers’ rights as endorsed by the UN.

Degair urged Arab countries to increase the quality and reduce the cost of their products. He called for more coordination among them to face the challenges of globalization.

Also speaking at the opening of the meeting, the secretary
general of the Arab Consumers Protection Association, Hamoud Al Bakgaiti slammed Arab governments for what he said was their weak stance towards civil society organizations.

Al Bakgaiti hailed Sudan’s rejection of donated food items that had been genetically modified.
