March 5, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – A child was killed, and several others were wounded on Wednesday in artillery shelling that struck several areas in the al-Thawra suburb north of Omdurman, the Khartoum State Health Ministry said.

The ministry blamed the shelling on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF has been targeting neighbourhoods in Omdurman’s Karari locality for months with artillery fire, resulting in civilian deaths and damage to infrastructure, according to local officials.

“A child was killed and five others were injured, with injuries ranging from minor to critical, due to artillery shelling by the rebel militia… that targeted the al-Thawra neighbourhoods,” the Health Ministry said in a statement. The ministry uses the term “rebel militia” to refer to the RSF.

The ministry statement said that the shelling hit neighbourhoods 10, 8, and 2 and struck al-Bulk Girls’ School about 30 minutes before classes were scheduled to begin.

Fath al-Rahman Mohammed al-Amin, acting director-general of the Khartoum State Health Ministry, condemned what he described as the systematic targeting of unarmed civilians in residential areas. He also criticized the RSF for shelling during morning hours when there is significant movement of citizens, students, and workers, including those at hospitals and health centres.

Al-Amin strongly condemned any targeting of medical staff, saying it violated international humanitarian law.
