More than 100 killed in attack on displaced camp in Sudan’s North Darfur
April 12, 2025 (EL FASHER) – More than 100 people, including nine staff members of an international relief organization, were killed in attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the Zamzam camp for displaced people, North Darfur’s health minister, Ibrahim Khater, announced on Saturday, as the same forces renewed their assault on the camp south of El Fasher.
The RSF launched a large-scale ground offensive on the Zamzam camp – 12 kilometers southwest of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state – early on Friday morning, using various types of weapons.
Platforms supporting the RSF broadcast video clips showing its members carrying out field executions that targeted dozens, including children and the elderly, in addition to setting fire to the homes of the displaced.
Ibrahim Khater, the director-general of the Ministry of Health and acting minister for North Darfur state, told Sudan Tribune, “More than 100 people were killed yesterday and dozens were injured in the RSF attacks targeting Zamzam camp.”
He explained that among the victims were nine medical personnel and relief workers employed by Relief International at the field hospital established within the Zamzam camp.
The state official described the situation in the camp as complex and tragic, citing systematic killing, genocide with heavy weapons, humiliation, and provocation faced by the displaced at the hands of the RSF.
He called upon the army, the joint force, mobilized citizens, and all capable of bearing arms to confront the humanitarian catastrophe and repel the RSF aggression.
During the attack on Zamzam camp, RSF forces stormed a Quran memorization center, killing approximately 15 students, including children, along with volunteer activists who were providing a meal to the students at the complex.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Coordination of Resistance Committees in El Fasher said the RSF launched a renewed, violent attack on Zamzam camp on Saturday using all types of weaponry, which was confronted by youth groups defending the camp.
The statement accused the attacking forces of shelling the camp with long-range “40 Dalil” rocket launchers, adding: “Shells are now falling like rain in the displaced camps, on land already soaked with blood and tears, without any oversight or accountability.”
The RSF seeks to control the camp to tighten its grip on the city of El Fasher from the south. It had previously attacked Zamzam last February, but the army, its allies, and popular resistance repelled the assault and forced a retreat.
