RSF-allied Tamazuj movement warns against sidelining in Sudan’s planned parallel government
May 13, 2025 (NAIROBI) – Mohamed Ali Qureshi, leader of the Tamazuj movement, an ally of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), warned on Tuesday against his group being marginalized in a parallel government that the Foundational Sudan Alliance intends to establish.
The Foundational Sudan Alliance is expected to announce the formation of this new administration in RSF-controlled territories in the coming period. The alliance comprises, alongside the RSF, Fadlallah Burma Nasir the leader of the National Umma Party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, several armed groups from the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF), and various professional and civil society bodies.
“We warn against undermining the movement’s political rights concerning participation in the anticipated peace government,” Qureshi told Sudan Tribune. “We will not accept half-solutions, especially as we are facing clear restlessness among the movement’s members in the states.”
He accused unnamed parties within the Foundational Sudan Alliance of failing to engage constructively with the Tamazuj movement.
Qureshi further stated to Sudan Tribune that his movement has not yet been allocated any representation quota in the upcoming government. He demanded “fairness in representation ratios,” asserting that the alliance had prioritized “bodies with no significant weight” while overlooking the role of groups that “made sacrifices in the war.”
“Hands off Tamazuj! We will not exchange the blood of our martyrs for any illogical concessions,” he added.
The Tamazuj movement was a signatory to the Juba Peace Agreement, signed in 2020 between Sudan’s transitional government and several armed groups. However, following the outbreak of conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF on April 15, 2023, Tamazuj announced its alignment with the RSF and its participation in hostilities against the national army within the initial months of the war.
